The Saturday Plein Air paint out event scheduled by the Creative Arts Council to be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, has been canceled due to “iffy” weather for setting up an easel for painting outside.
Artists are welcome anytime to come to the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre patio and set up to paint the scenery along the river.
Another opportunity is to come to the AC&VC on Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon to join the group of artists who paint weekly in Studio B.

Prepare to be spooked by a live display of creepy, crawly critters at the Limberlost State Historic Site’s Spooktacular on Oct. 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.!
No brute beasts or menacing monsters will be present — just creatures that sneak, slink and slither in the night! A few of the animals featured include rats, hissing cockroaches, a Patagonian Cavy and snakes. Dare to embrace these slithery creatures of the night. Ossian United Methodist Harvest Dinner, Bazaar, and Gospel Concert are being held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Church. A Chicago Shopping Trip is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.
A chartered, restroom equiped, bus will be leaving the South Adams Senior Center Parking Lot at 6 a.m., loading at 5:45 a.m., with a return of 10 p.m.. This trip is open to all area counties and any age 15 years and above. Any person 15-18 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone under the age 15 is not permitted to attend.
The bus will drop people off at the Watertower Place, to shop at any of the other stores and shops on Chicago's Magnificient Mile. For persons wanting to get on the bus in Decatur, a stop is scheduled at 6:15 a.m. at the Scott's Parking lot.
A non-refundable charge of $40 is the cost. We need 56 persons to charter the bus, if we do not get enough people, the trip will be cancelled and we will refund your money. But if we go, no refunds will be given.
Bring snacks along to eat on the bus, but no glass containers are permitted. Meals in Chicago are your responsiblity. Reservations and payment must be made at the South Adams Senior Center by Wednesday, Oct. 28. Please call 260-589-8877 to sign up .

ArtMorph Exhibit now through Jan. 3
ArtMorph: Combining Art ad Science is a new temporary exhibit now through Jan. 3, 2010 at Science Central in Fort Wayne.
The exhibit will show various pieces of artwork created out of recycled plastic and metal items including penguins, cheetah, fish, crane, horse, stork and goat scupltures.
A variety of interactive stations will allow for hands-on experiences about how scientists classify animals, animal anatomy, recycling methods and materials science.
Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and students, children under age three are free. For more information log onto: www.sciencecentral.org.

Spooktacular! at Limberlost Oct. 24
Limberlost State Historic Site will present Spooktacular! Oct. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Geneva.
No brute beasts or menacing monsters will be present — just creatures that sneak, slink and slither in the night! A few of the animals featured include rats, hissing cockroaches, a Patagonian Cavy and snakes. Dare to embrace these slithery creatures of the night. Discover the behaviors of these wild animals while creating a scary creature of your own. Children can participate in Halloween games and win prizes and candy.

Soup and Sandwich Supper Oct. 27
The Swiss Heritage Society will sponsor Soup, Sandwich and Pie Supper on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the South Adams High School in Berne.
The menu will include chicken noodle, chili, (donated by the Palmer House) and ham and bean soups, ham, hot dogs and Sloppy Joe sandwiches and a huge variety of delicious pies and cakes for dessert. The ham and bean soup is made “from scratch” by volunteers over the open fire at Swiss Heritage Village and contains about ten pounds of country-smoked ham. Swiss Heritage Society members and community friends donate all the ingredients for the supper.
Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
The community is invited to attend the supper and then the Berne Halloween parade at 7 p.m.

Senior Luncheon Oct. 28
The October Senior Luncheon will be held at the South Adams Senior Center, 825 Hendricks St.,Berne Wednesday, Oct. 28 at noon.
The luncheon will be catered by Norm's Preble Gardens and the menu consists of baked pork chop, cheesy potatoes, California Blend vegetables, roll and butter, chocolate cake, lemonade and coffee.
Entertainment will be furnished by Doug Milligan, Trombonist, from Geneva.
October birthdays and anniversaries will be acknowledged and door prizes will be given away.

Mothers to learn about flu vaccines Oct. 22
At the Oct. 22 Moms’ Morning Out meeting, mothers will learn about seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccinations. April Heyerly, infectious disease pharmacist at Lutheran Hospital, will help mother sort out what’s right for them and their families.
All mothers of infants and children age five and under are invited to attend this week or any weekly meeting of Moms’ Morning Out. They are from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 1935 North Main Street in Bluffton, behind Walgreen’s.
Mothers can enter at north door with the YMCA sign.
Moms’ Morning Out is sponsored by the YMCA. There is no charge and no registration. Toddler and preschoolers through age five are invited to enjoy organized play.

Fall harvest

Oct. 23-24
Fall fun is coming to J. Edward Roush Lake on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24, with its annual fall festival for all ages.
The Little Turtle Recreation Area main shelter house will be the center of the festivities. Attendees should be sure to wear a Halloween costume and bring a bag on Saturday for collecting candy.
On Saturday, hot dogs, drinks and chips will be served from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. A s’more kit will be sold for $1, along with the chance to cook the campfire treat. Hayrides featuring stories from the past will be available from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Guests will be able to get a pumpkin during their ride and enjoy carving together afterward. The park will have a small supply of carving tools available. From 5 to 7 p.m., kids games, a campfire and music by the band Small Town will be offered.
At 6:30 p.m., the results of this year’s Dutch Oven Cook-off will available and the summer’s first-place team will earn the grand prize package sponsored by Bozarth’s Country Store and Campground.
The Trunk-or-Treat time is 7 to 7:30 p.m. All children must be with a responsible adult. No child care will be provided. Admission is $3 per person (adults and children over 2 years old). One admission covers both days if participants bring their paid admittance pass with them.

H1N1 CLINIC ANNOUNCED

A H1N1 flu clinic is scheduled for Saturday October 17 at Bluffton High School from 8:00 – 11:00AM. The vaccine will be administered to the following groups and on a first come first serve basis.

• People from 6 months to 24 years of age
• Household contacts and caregivers for children younger that 6 months of age
• Pregnant Women
• Persons 25 years to 64 years who have health conditions associated with higher risk of complications from influenza

Important information for parents regarding the H1N1 vaccine:

• Children under 10 ears old are recommended to have a second dose of the H1N1 vaccine at least 4 weeks apart. It is the parents responsibility to know when the child received the initial vaccine and when they are due for the next dose.
• There MUST be a minimum of 4 weeks between the seasonal flu mist and the H1N1 flu mist.
• The H1N1 flu mist vaccine is the PREFERED vaccination method for HEALTHY children over 2 years of age.

Have a SAFE Halloween

October 31 should be a fun time for children. Dr. James Mowry, Director, Indiana Poison Center, would like to offer the following suggestions so that your small ghosts and goblins can enjoy a safe and happy event.
• Before going out trick or treating - feed your children to reduce their urge to snack on the candy they collect. Take your own small bag of candy so they won’t be tempted to eat from their bags before the treats can be checked. Consider giving non-edible treats to children who visit your home. Be sure to give out-age appropriate treats since young children can easily choke on small objects.
• Costumes should be nonflammable, warm and an appropriate length to avoid trips and falls. Masks should fit properly and have large eyeholes to improve breathing and vision - they should be raised to allow a clear view when crossing the street. Consider using makeup instead of a mask to allow unobstructed vision. Read labels to make sure that face paints and makeup are non-toxic. Some products may contain emollient laxatives, talc or hydrocarbons, which can cause problems. If any makeup is swallowed, treatment depends on amount ingested, ingredients and symptoms. Call the Poison Center if you think makeup or other costume components have been swallowed. Wash skin with soap and water if a skin reaction develops.
• Trick-or-treat only in familiar, well-lit areas. Better yet, give or attend an indoor party. Children should always be accompanied by an adult. Take a flashlight with you and put reflective tape on clothing and goody bags. Look carefully before crossing neighborhood streets and for high traffic areas, use the crosswalk.
• After you return home - carefully check all candy before allowing it to be eaten and only eat treats that are in their original unopened wrappers. Throwaway any candy in wrappers that are faded, have holes or tears, or signs of re-wrapping. Only eat homemade treats if they are received from someone you know and trust. When in doubt - throw it out! Dr. Mowry encourages parents not to rely on x-rays to determine the safety of treats, they won’t rule out contamination and glass and are no substitute for careful visual examination.
• Children can draw a face on a pumpkin or scrape out the contents but an adult should do the actual carving. Roasted pumpkin seeds can be a tasty treat, but they can also be a choking hazard for young children. Be fire safe and keep jack o’ lanterns away from doorsteps and landings where costumes may brush against the flame. Indoor lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations or other furnishings. Glow sticks are a safe alternative to candles. Exposure to a small amount of the fluid from a glow stick generally only causes a mild irritation. Contact with the eyes can cause moderate irritation. If the contents are drunk, nausea and irritation can result. For skin exposure - remove any contaminated clothing and flood the area with cool water for at least 15-20 minutes. Wash gently with soap and water and rinse. In case of eye contact ­- flood the eye with warm (not hot) water for 15-20 minutes and have the person blink as much as possible. Do not force the eyelid open and do not put in any type of eye drops. If the contents are swallowed, wipe out the mouth with a clean wet cloth and give a small amount of clear liquid to drink, then call the Poison Center.

Artists get Wild at CAC

The Indiana Wildlife Artists Association will present their 26th annual awards exhibit at Balentine Gallery in the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre, 211 Water Street, Bluffton, Indiana, Oct. 16 through Nov. 30. The artists will be on hand to discuss their work with the public at a free Open House Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 to 4 PM.

Guests will view a variety of two and three dimensional art works in various media and styles depicting a wide range of natural subjects. The exhibition was judged at its first display site in Evansville, Indiana, by experts in the Fine Arts and Wildlife Naturalist professions.

Some of the finest amateur and professional artists working in the area of wildlife and nature art from the state of Indiana have entered works in the exhibit.

Bags for Boxing

The Market Street Boxing Gym will sponsor a six week event called “Bags for Boxing.”
Club members and community volunteers will fill bags of leaves in exchange for pledges to raise money for club programs. The kids have set a goal of 300 bags of leaves which they plan to fill by raking the yards of senior citizens in the community.
There will be no cost to seniors. Money is raised from the pledges only. People may pledge as little or as much as they like. All proceeds will be used to help cover the cost of a local boxing show.

The exhibit has been in Evansville before coming here, where it will open Oct. 15 and remain through Nov. 30. Hours for the exhibit will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

American Council of the Blind of Indiana Convention

Anyone who has low vision, is losing vision or is blind may want to plan now to attend the American Council of the Blind of Indiana’s 38th annual convention. It will be held Oct. 30 and 31 at The Marten House, 1801 West 86th Street, Indianapolis.
The theme of this year’s convention is “Envisioning the Future through ACBI.”
Friday evening’s session will begin at 7 p.m. Highlights of the evening session will be updates on developments and student activities from the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and a presentation by ACB’s Director of Governmental Relations, Eric Bridges, on his personal journey to success.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, with the business meeting starting at 9 a.m.
Scheduled speakers are: William Dixon from Bosma Enterprises will talk about AmeriCorps/Vista and his project at Bosma Enterprises. Rochelle Schmitt, Nappanee, will talk about her participation in the Braille Challenge and her trip to the national finals. Eric Bridges from the ACB National office, Washington, DC will speak on updates in legislation regarding people with vision loss. Dr. Debra McConnaha will give a presentation on eye care and prevalent eye conditions.
Several vendors of adaptive aids and devices will be present on Saturday to demonstrate their products.

Callithumpian Quilt Show Oct. 24-25
The Callithumpian Quilt Show will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 4 p.m. Making this the 8th annual show sponsored by the Creative Quilters Guild. The show will be held at the Riverside Center, 231 East Monroe Street (US 224) in Decatur.
A display of 180-200 quilts will be on exhibit. A merchants mall will be available for those quilting must-haves. Many awards will be given including People’s choice and Judge’s choice.

Boys Scout Troop 149 to sell popcorn Oct. 10
Members of the Boys Scout Troop 149 will be selling popcorn for their fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lowes and WalMart in Bluffton.
Proceeds go to help pay for summer camp and other events throughout the year.

Horse Benefit Ride Oct. 11
On Sunday, October 11 at 1 p.m. members of the Circle W Riders and Wells Co. 4-H Horse and Pony Clubs will have a benefit ride to help out with the many medical bills that both Pat Bales and Don Mittlestedt are occurring during their stay at the hospital. Pat has been in the hospital now for over a week and a half with a blood clot. To make matters worse she is diabetic.
Don was diagnosed with a in-operable brain tumor about three years ago and has recently been hospitalized with inflammation of the nerve endings along with many other complications.
The two horse clubs, along with anyone who would like to join, weather permitting, will gather at the 4-H park at 1 p.m., A hay wagon will also be available for anyone who doesn't ride horses but would like to join in. Those attending will ride as a group for about six to 10 miles in the country. Following the ride, there will be a carry-in lunch in their honor at the pavilion in the 4-H park. Chili and hot dogs will be furnished.
The clubs will be accepting non-perishable or monetary gifts to help get through this difficult time. Anyone who would like to contribute may drop off a contribution at the pavilion anytime between 1 and 5 p.m. or call Mary Nolan at 260-273-0616 to make arrangements to have items picked up.

Chicago Shopping Trip Nov. 14
A Chicago Shopping Trip has been scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009. A chartered, restroom equiped, bus will leave the South Adams Senior Center Parking Lot at 6 a.m., loading at 5:45 a.m., with a return of 10 p.m.. The trip is open to all area counties and any age 15 years and above. Any person 15-18 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone under the age 15 is not permitted to attend. The bus will drop riders off at the Watertower Place to begin their shopping at any of the stores and shops on Chicago's Magnificient Mile.
For persons wanting to get on the bus in Decatur, a stop is scheduled at 6:15 a.m. at the Scott's Parking lot. Cost is a non-refundable price of $40 per person. To make the trip a success 56 people need to sign up.

Ossian community fall fest Oct. 17
Free community fall fest will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Ossian Church of the Nazarene.
Activities include food, games, prizes, hayride, and “Trunk or Treat” for kids so bring a pail or sack. Open to adults and kids is a decorated pumpkin contest.

Turkey shoot Oct. 11
The Willshire Sportsman's Club will hold a Turkey Shoot Sunday Oct. 11 starting at noon on the club grounds located two miles east of Willshire, Ohio on State Road 81. Only 12 gauge shotguns will be allowed and the shells will be furnished. Youth shoots will be held for youth 16 years of age and under. 20 gauge shotguns only will be allowed for the youth shoots and the shells will be furnished. A lunch stand will be serving sandwiches and beverages. Public is welcome.

Register you child, ages two through five, for the “Deer Me” program Wednesday, Oct. 14 and Thursday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Salamonie Interpretive Center.

The Wells County Extension Homemakers will hold their semi-annual work day Thursday, Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 4-H Community Building at the 4-H Park in Bluffon.
During this work day library bags will be made for First Read Program, hand work will be done on turbans for cancer patients and small throws will be made for children at Riley Hospital. Original music to honor 3 women at Phil concert
On Saturday, Oct. 10, 8 p.m. the Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s Masterworks Concert will feature a commissioned piece of music honoring three women who were dedicated to encouraging, nurturing and supporting the art of music.
“What the Soul Remembers” by Amy Scurria of Durham, NC will honor the memories of Wilda Gene Marcus, Dr. K. Marie Stolba and Colleen Benninghoff, all trained musicians who had a passion for music and were enthusiastic patrons and supporter of the FW Philharmonic. The FW Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Honorary Society funded the project.
Music Director Designate, Andrew Constantine will be conducting the concert to be presented at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne. Tickets start at $15 and may be arranged for by calling 260-481-0777, online at www.fwphil.org or at the Embassy Box Office.

South Adams Senior trip to Bearcreek Oct. 8
The South Adams Senior Center will sponsor a Bearcreek Farms Day Thursday, Oct. 8. Cost is $20 per person and includes a family style meal, dessert, drink, tax and a 2 p.m. showing of the Van Dels (50's and 60's music). The tip is not included.

Bear Scouts event at Limberlost Oct. 10
In 1916 Robert Baden-Powell helped found the Cub Scout movement. At the same time, Hoosier author and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter became famous for her novels and nature studies exploring the Limberlost Swamp. On Oct. 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. the Limberlost S.H.S. will bring these two worlds together.
Bear Scouts are invited to explore the Limberlost Swamp with the Limberlost S.H.S. staff where Stratton-Porter once made fascinating wildlife discoveries. Bear Scouts that take part in “Sharing your World with Wildlife” activities will earn Bear Achievement # 5. These activities include building a birdhouse, discovering wetland animals and habitats, engaging in conservation efforts to protect natural environments and receiving a guided tour of the Loblolly Nature Preserve, where youngsters can come face to face with wetland creatures. A light afternoon snack will accompany the Scouts in their quests to become young naturalists.

Deadline Oct. 12 for Fall harvest banquet
The fall harvest banquet will be held at the South Adams Senior Center on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. The meal will be catered by Norm’s Preble Gardens and the menu consists of tossed salad, swiss steak, baked chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, roll/butter, assorted pies, lemonade and coffee. Alumni and faculty Exhibition begins Oct. 17
The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis has announced the opening of the Alumni and Faculty Exhibition on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Center. This annual tradition showcases new work by alumni and faculty of the School of Creative Arts. A wide variety of media will be on display. The exhibition will run through Sunday, Nov. 29. Ways to a Better Life . . . and a Better You !! will be Judi Merkel’s topic for the Thursday, Oct. 8 Moms’ Morning Out. Judi will share what you can do if you are ready to kick your life up a notch, in order to improve the quality of your life, plus your outlook on life.
Judi Merkel, former Purdue Extension Educator, has been working with families for many years so understands how overwhelmed and inadequate mothers can feel. Therefore, she will give mothers refreshing ideas about how to renew themselves. All mothers of infants and children age five and under are invited to attend this week or any weekly meeting of Moms’ Morning Out. They are from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 1935 North Main Street in Bluffton, behind Walgreen’s. Mothers can enter at north door with the YMCA sign. Moms’ Morning Out is sponsored by the YMCA. Don't Forget: SWCS Silent Auction Today!!

Southern Wells Community Schools is holding a silent auction of surplus materials Thursday and Friday, Oct. 1 and 2. The auction items are located in the storage building behind the main facility and may be viewed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Items to be sold include science and art tables, roofing pitch and aluminum paint, Powermatic band saw, Rockwell joiner planer, Amaco kiln, metal file cabinet, and camera equipment.

Bid sheets may be picked up in the Central Office or at the storage site. Silent bids will be taken from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with the bids to be awarded at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5. Winning bidders will be notified at that time.

Items must be paid for and removed from the SWCS grounds by 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Any remaining items will be discarded after that time.
