Free Hoosier Outdoor Experience is hassle free, too

Indiana DNR Release:

Not only is this weekend’s Hoosier Outdoor Experience free to participants, it’s hassle free.

Parking for the Sept. 18-19 event at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, which runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, is free. Use the Maj. Gen. E.J. Bean Finance Center parking lot just east of 56th Street off Post Road. Enter the lot off Post Road. If using online mapping, enter the intersection of Herbert Lord Road and North Post Road as destination.

Buses will transport you to the park, free. The accessible lot will have an accessible bus into the event. Because of the more than 50 free outdoor activities in the park, there is no public parking there, meaning guests walk around, hassle free. Even though the property comprises 1,700 acres, you’ll need the space for maximum outdoor enjoyment.

If you don’t want to drive at all, ride the city bus. IndyGo Route 4 runs to the event but only on Saturday for the usual fee. If you’re close enough to bicycle or walk, enter through the foot entrance on Glenn Road. Supervised Pedal and Park bicycle racks will be available for bicyclists. Free.

Once the free buses take you inside the park, ride the free trolleys to the activity areas desired all day long. An event map is at hoosieroutdoorexperience.IN.gov. You will also receive one upon entering.

Hungry or thirsty? That’s not free but it’s convenient—you don’t have to leave the park. Several low-cost food and beverage options will be available for purchase in the food area from a variety of vendors. You’re also welcome to bring your own food and beverage; however, large coolers will not be permitted. Limit yourself to what you want to carry all day.

Remember, this event is for doing not watching. Wear clothing and footwear suitable for rigorous outdoor activities. Those who plan to canoe or kayak should expect shoes to get wet.

The event will go on rain or shine; however, if extreme weather requires cancellation, such a decision will be made by 7:30 a.m. on that particular day and posted on the websites below.

The Hoosier Outdoor Experience is presented by the DNR and the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation. The goal is to introduce people to outdoor activities they may have never tried.

Advance registration is requested to assist with staffing and planning but is not mandatory. Walk-ups are welcome. To register, go to hoosieroutdoorexperience.IN.gov and click on the orange registration icon. Watch for event updates there or on Facebook at Facebook.com/HoosierOutdoorExperience.

Arts & Crafts & W.B. Brown topics for free program

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. a free program on America’s Arts & Craft Movement and Bluffton’s successful artisan W. B. Brown will be presented by Charles A. Shepard III, Director of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.
The program will be presented at the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre, which was designed by Fort Wayne architect Ron Dick to be reminiscent of the arts and crafts movement period..
The American Arts and Crafts Movement is a domestic style in architecture, interior and landscape design, applied arts and the decorative arts. It’s influence on lifestyle philosophy began in the last years of the 19th century and as a comprehensive design and art movement it remained popular into the 1930s. However, it has continued with numerous revivals and restoration projects through present times, having won hearts and tastes of generations.
The Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre has one of the original Brown chandeliers gracing the centre’s window overlooking the Wabash River. It was originally in the First Bank of Berne.
Brown’s Bluffton company made lamps, furnishings and home interior decor from 1906 to 1923. Dr. Michael and Jill Clark researched the Brown legacy on their visits to Wells County in the early 2000’s. The simple, refined aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts era were meant to ennoble middle class homes, often bungalow styled. The restrained and harmonious beauty of the style continues to appeal to today’s designers.
Shepard’s program is offered free of charge through the outreach endeavor of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and is hosted in Bluffton by the Creative Arts Council.

Wells County Rodeo!

RODEO SET UP UNDERWAY AT 4-H PARK

Broken Horn Rodeo Company from Ripley, Ohio and 4-H volunteers have been busy setting up gates and livestock corrals for the Championship Rodeo scheduled for Saturday, September 4th. The Rodeo will begin at 7:30 PM and Country Music singer Dwayne Spaw will perform at 7 PM. Spaw's high energy performance will prepare the fans for an exciting rodeo.

A total of 103 participants have paid their entry fees with some performing in multiple events. A drawing is held in some events to limit participation to 15 during the actual rodeo. Immediately after the official rodeo, the remaining participants not selected in the draw are allowed to participate for points and prize money.

A special performance of the Wells County 4-H Color Guard is slated along with Melissa Nolan singing the National Anthem. Melissa, a Norwell High School senior and a 4-H member, recently won the State Fair Youth Talent Contest.

People are encouraged to bring a blanket or seat pad to sit upon. Lawn chairs will not be allowed this year in the concrete bleachers. The improved seating is hoped to provide better viewing of the entire rodeo.

Handicapped parking will be available close to the entry gate at the rodeo.

Stick Horse races will again be held for youth ages 5 and under and 6 รฑ 9.

4-H volunteers will be serving food during the event starting at 5 PM when the gates open for people to select their favorite seat.
