Jazz on the Patio opens 2009 Hoosier Salon Tour

By BARBARA BARBIERI
Jazz on the Patio at the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre will highlight the opening reception for the 2009 Hoosier Salon Tour in the CAC’s Balentine Gallery.
The free evening of music will be presented from 7 to 9 p.m., Sept 12, with munchies and soft drinks and a wine bar open for business as well.
The musicians will be professor Monika Herzig on the keyboard, well-known Beeblebrox guitarist Peter Kienle, drummer David Hilliker and saxophonist David Streeter.
Sponsors for the evening are First Bank of Berne and Honegger, Ringger and Co. along with corporate members of the Arts Council.
Those planning to attend will want to provide their own lawn seating, as benches tend to fill up early. In the event of inclement weather the music will move indoors.
Jazz musicians Monika Herzig and Peter Kienle are both natives of Germany who now teach music in Bloomington. Monika’s recording of “In Your Own Sweet Voice—A Tribute to Women Composers” has received much praise. Peter instructs guitar to select students and composes and records music. The two met after Peter started a Jazz band named Beeblebrox in which Monika was the keyboardist.
They later married and moved to the United States where they continue to play with Beeblebrox. In 2007, Acme Records of Bloomington released Norbert Krapf and jazz pianist-composer Monika Herzig’s CD Imagine—Indiana in Music and Words.
Drummer Hilliker and sax player Streeter will be familiar to the audience due to their frequent appearances in area night spots.
The CAC’s Balentine gallery was selected as the first venue to show the 2009 Hoosier Salon collection by Indiana’s finest artists. Many of the paintings have receive significant awards. Currently the arts council is seeking a sponsor for this exhibit which will be viewable from Sept. 12 through Oct. 3. It will be open for viewing to the public free of charge.
