CAC offers oil painting workshop with Gwen Gutwein

Gwen Gutwein, whose exhibit of Indiana Barn oil paintings was widely viewed in the CAC’s Balentine Gallery last October and November, will offer an oil painting workshop for any interested artists at the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre in Bluffton on Friday, Feb. 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an hour off for lunch.
The subject will be barns, a field and some trees, similar to the painting pictured here. The guest instructor will post a sample painting while guiding participants in the process of creating a similar painting on a 12 by 16 inch canvas. All supplies will be provided by each participant, with a list of needed paints and other supplies available the time of registration.
The enrollment fee of $40 is payable to the CAC and is due by Feb. 9 at the art center office, 211 Water St., Bluffton or requested by email at cac@adamswells.com
Though best known for paintings of barns, Gutwein is acclaimed in northeast Indiana for works appearing in print on publications and for her studio work and instruction in drawing, composition and painting. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Indiana University, graduating with honors. In addition she has studied painting in Washington, Utah, North Carolina, Florida, Greece, Italy and Indiana. She has painted for a number of years, having won numerous awards. Many of her paintings are in private and public collections across the United States. She has mural art on location to her credit as well.
In her artist’s statement, Gutwein reveals that the beauty of a flowered staircase, the tranquility of sunlight streaming across a doorway or maybe the nostalgia of an old barn from the last century, inspires her to create art that will affect the viewers, to cause them to pause, to evoke thought and dialog, to stir an emotion, or to cause someone to grab a breath. She says her ultimate goal is “to stir the very nature of our humanity.” Those who’ve viewed her work may agree that they have found it touching.
