Norwell Pool programs still available

There’s still time to sign up for a plethora of programs to be hosted by the Norwell Pool.
CPR/AED and/or Lifeguard/First Aid Recertification classes will be held at the Norwell Pool on Saturday, April 3 at 9 a.m..
Cost is $30 per certification for those people living within the Northern Wells Community Schools district; $40 per certification for those outside of the district. Checks should be made payable to Norwell Pool. Another recertification class will be held on May 15.
The Norwell Pool will also be conducting American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes beginning Friday April 9 from 4 to 9 p.m. The class schedule may be adjusted to accommodate students. This is a 26 to 32 hour class which includes first aid, CPR, AED and lifeguard training.
Lifeguarding candidates must be at least 15 years old and pass swim skills assessment. The cost is $150 for people living in the NWCS District; $170 for those outside of the district. Norwell Pool is also offering four-week swim lesson sessions – Session #1 begins on April 5 (session #2 begins on May 3).
Class times are available on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays (except infant/toddler classes). Class fees are $30 per session for those in the NWCS District ($35 for those outside the district).
Classes offered are:
• Infant (6-18 months) and toddler (18-36 months) – 5:30 to 6 p.m. (Monday and Wednesdays only)
• Preschool (ages 3-5) – 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. or 6 to 6:30 p.m. (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday)
• Elementary (kindergarten and up) – 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. or 6:30-7:15 p.m. (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday)
Private lessons may be available on a limited basis.

The Norwell Pool is also offering stroke drills and one-meter diving. These classes are offered as two 4-week swim team prep classes.
Session one begins on April 5 (session two begins on May 3). Classes offered are:
Stroke Drills – 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday and Wedsnesday or Tuesday and Thursday.
Fees for stroke drills class are $30 per session for those people living within the Northern Wells Community School district and $35 for those outside the district.
One-meter diving – 6:15-7:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays only. Fees for one-meter diving class are $45 for those people living in the district and $50 for those outside the district.

Finally, the Norwell Pool is offering the following adult programming options:
• Two 4-week swim sessions – Session #1 begins on April 5 (session #2 begins on May 3):
• Laps swims. Fees are $10 per session for those living in the district and $15 for those outside the district.
• Early morning swim – Tuesdays and Thursdays only from 6 to 7 a.m.
• Evening adult lap swim – Mondays and Wednesdays only from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.
• Water exercise is offered on Mondays and Wednesday from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Fees are $20 per session for those living in the district and $25 for those living outside the district.
• Adult swim lessons are offered on Mondays & Wednesdays from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Fees are $20 per session for those living in the NWCS District and $25 for those outside the district.

Badminton League is up and running

The Bluffton Parks & Recreation Department’s Badminton League is up and running again. This is a great chance to learn this fast-paced game that gives you a true workout that is also very fun! There is a one-time $5.00 fee per person, and it’s open to all high school students and older individuals. The league is held at the Bluffton City Gym on Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 p.m. All equipment is supplied for you, you just need to bring your energy! CAC offers breakfast for supper April 8

“Breakfast for Supper” will be offered by the Creative Arts Council as presented by Fancheon Resler on Thursday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m.
Mrs. Resler will prepare the recipes she recently taught for the Bluffton Parks Department Senior Exploration series and attenders will be invited to sample the results. Cost is $8 per guest with reservations needed to (260) 824-5222.

Civic off-main drama at FW downtown library

The auditorium at the main Allen County Public Library will host the Civic Off- Main production of “The Road to Mecca from April 2-18.
Phillip H. Colglazier is directing the contemporary drama of an artist in the South African boondocks. Members of the cast are Joan Goldner (Helen), Gloria Minnich (Elsa) and Larry Bower (Marius).
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for those 23 and under and $12 for Sunday senior matinees. Curtain times are at 7:30 p.m. on April 8 & 15; 8 p.m. on April 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17 and at 2 p.m. on April 11 & 18.

Student Art Exhibit in Fort Wayne April 10

The School of Creative Arts will host the 34th annual Student Art Exhibit and SOCA Student Awards Ceremony Saturday, April 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Mimi and Ian Rolland Center at the University of Saint Francis.

Bluffton Parks Events

Tuesday March 30-Egg Coloring Program
Bring the entire family to the Bluffton City Gym from 4-5:30pm, for some egg coloring fun. Let us take care of the mess while the kids decorate with stickers, dyes and other supplies. Just be sure to bring your own hard boiled eggs and wear play clothes. FREE!

April 2- Registration begins for Kids Camp
This two week camp will be available for children K - 3rd grade June 7 - 18, or July 12 - 23, from 8 am to noon. Children will enjoy gymnastics, tennis, games and swim lessons. Cost is $30 per student. For details call 824-6069.

April 3- Easter Egg Hunt 3 pm
The lawn at Roush park will be full of colorful eggs and fresh rabbit tracks on Saturday April 3rd. Bring your basket toting youngsters to the Roush park boy’s concession stand by 3pm for the most anticipated event of the spring. Children will be divided into the following age groups 3 and under, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Each age group will have the coveted “golden egg” message inside one of the eggs. LANCASTER AND OSSIAN KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP SESSIONS ANNOUNCED

Ossian and Lancaster Elementary schools will each hold two Kindergarten Round-up sessions.
Ossian Elementary’s sessions will be Tuesday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Parents should call the school to sign up for one of the sessions – 622-4179.
Lancaster Elementary’s sessions will be Tuesday, April 20, at 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. Parents should call the school to sign up for one of the sessions – 565-3135.
The child being enrolled in kindergarten next year needs to attend with the parent. Parents will have an informational meeting while the children participate in some screening activities with kindergarten teachers.
At the conclusion of each Round-up session, the Wells County Health Department will be available to give kindergarten shots. The child’s immunization record must be presented before any shots will be given.
Each school will provide a tour of kindergarten classrooms and have a school bus on site to tour.
Any parent who cannot attend Kindergarten Round-up should contact the school the child will attend.
Keep in mind that the child’s birth certificate, social security card, and immunization record is needed at the Round-up session.
The State of Indiana requires that STUDENTS MUST BE FIVE YEARS OLD ON OR BEFORE AUGUST 1, 2010, to enroll in kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year.

Keeping the lights burning: Three Centuries of Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers

Free lighthouse program on April 6 at the library

Lighthouses are impressive structures. They are beautiful to look at, often located at stunning locations, and they remind us of a time when surviving was an adventure. You can hear colorful stories of the brave men and woman who kept the lights burning, along with history, music and information about today’s lighthouses, when Donn and Diane Werling of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association appear at the Wells County Public Library on Tuesday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

Donn and Diane Werling, of Fort Wayne, are founding members of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association (GLLKA) which is based in Mackinaw City near the Old Mackinac Point lighthouse. They have served as modern day lighthouse keepers (Diane was the head keeper of Grosse Point Lighthouse for 10 years), continue to help staff the St. Helena Light Station on the western Straits of Mackinac, and lead maritime heritage education workshops each summer on the island.

Besides sharing their own stories at the library, the Werlings will bring to life the tale of Captain Edwin James Moore, a lighthouse keeper at Grosse Point Light from the turn of the century. Captain Moore was typical of historic keepers and their exacting attention to detail. As President Thomas Jefferson said when he inaugurated the U.S. lighthouse service, “…lives ride upon their safe keeping”

GLLKA was originally an informal gathering of retired lighthouse keepers. The group incorporated in 1983 and quickly began a project to save and restore the abandoned St. Helena Light Station. With the help of dedicated volunteers, work began and the lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. GLLKA continues to work on its own lighthouse projects and assists other organizations around the country. GLLKA has purchased the Cheboygan River Front Range lighthouse with plans to return it to its circa 1910 appearance when Cheboygan was in its heyday and is also collaborating on the Cheboygan Crib Light and the St. James Lighthouse on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan.

The Northeast Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross has set dates and locations for upcoming blood drives in Wells County.
They are:
• Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Wells 4-H Park and County Community Center, located at 1240 South 4-H Road in Bluffton. Call 824-1689 to schedule a blood donation appointment.
• Sunday, April 11, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, located at 1300 N. Main St. in Bluffton. Call 824-1380 to schedule a blood donation appointment.

4-H forms for membership due April 1st

4-H membership forms for Wells County are due to the 4-H Leaders or the County Extension Office on or before Thursday, April 1st.
Families may drop off the forms after office hours at the Drop Box located under the canopy of the Wells County Community Center at the 4-H Park in Bluffton.
Youth may become 4-H members when they enter third grade and may continue membership through the completion of grade 12.
Mini 4-H membership is for youth in grades 1 and 2. Mini 4-H membership is due
May 1. Forms will be distributed in late March and early April to all school classrooms. Forms can be returned to the school office.
Youth in the Archery, Dog Obedience, and the Shot Gun Safety projects may join at their first meeting in April.

4-H Dairy feeder identification day April 17

The Wells County 4-H Dairy Feeder Calf Identification Day will be held Saturday, April 17, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Wells County 4-H Park in the Multi-Purpose Arena located west of the horse barn.
All 4-H dairy feeder calves must be weighed and ear tagged in order to show at the 4-H Fair in July. Calves may not weigh more than 215 pounds. at the ID Day. Only steers (no heifers) may be exhibited in the project.
This year’s 4-H Fair will be held July 17 to 22.
The Dairy Feeder Show is scheduled for Monday, July 19, at 6 p.m.
Animal forms will be available at the event and a local veterinarian will also be at the event if you are in need of their services.

Friends of the Shelter garage sale

Friends of the Shelter, which raises money to support the Wells County Animal Shelter, is organizing a garage sale.
Do you have items that are of no value to you, but may be to someone else? Donate them to our garage sale! (We don't want books or clothing--we have plenty of those already.)
All of the proceeds go to Friends of the Shelter who raise funds to help purchase items to serve the animals..... we buy leashes and collars and items that keep pets active while in the shelter.

We are going to participate in the citywide garage sale in Bluffton on May 1st. (We are going to conduct the sale on April 30th also)

2010 Senior Discount Cards are now available at the Wells County Council on Aging from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cards are $7 and are not transferable or $8 laminated. Many local vendors participate in this senior discount program.
If it is impossible to go to the Council on Aging office to purchase a card, you can receive it by mail Send the agency a stamped, self-addressed legal sized envelope; enclose the $7 per card and the additional $1 fee if lamination is desired. The discount card and list of sponsors will then be mailed to you.
Sale of Senior Citizens Discount Cards are a fundraising project for the local Council on Aging. The money raised by the sale of the cards supports many services the organization has to offer within the Wells County Community, including programs such as transportation and in-home services.

Participants will pilot their own vehicles, as their navigator steers them to area historic sites and treasures. Each day the teams will receive their “top-secret” route directions and their daily on-the-road scavenger hunt list. By searching for various items, teams will learn Indiana trivia and history, accumulating points. The three teams with the most points will be awarded prizes at the awards banquet on the last night.

Cost is $214 per person (based on double occupancy), which includes two nights of lodging, breakfasts and dinners, an award ceremony/dinner, two days of road rally events and nightly entertainment.

Community Easter Egg Hunt April 3
The Southern Wells Community Church will sponsor a Community Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 3 at 10 a.m. on the south playground of Southern Wells Elementary School. There will be three ages groups, a special needs group and door prizes for all ages. The Easter Bunny plans to hop by too!

Vietnam-era weapons demo, March 27, at Fort Harrison

Indiana DNR Release:

Fort Harrison State Park and the Museum of 20th Century Warfare will team up to host a demonstration of Vietnam-era military weapons on Saturday, March 27 at Building 704 near the Park Office from 2–3 p.m.

The program will feature some of the authentic weapons used by both the U.S. Army and the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. Visitors will watch vintage firearms operate as trained re-enactors fire blanks through each weapon.

Fort Harrison State Park was once Fort Benjamin Harrison, a U.S. Army Reservation during the Vietnam War. Soldiers were sent to the Fort for specialized training for a variety of schools that included nursing, communications, logistics and command. Thousands of soldiers were once stationed at the Fort during the Vietnam War.

The Museum of 20th Century Warfare is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the armed conflicts of the 20th century. The museum is also committed to honoring the veterans who served our country in the 20th century.

The re-enactors are civilians whose hobby is portraying soldiers. The re-enactors dress in authentic and/or reproduction uniforms that they have researched and acquired. They use actual Vietnam-era equipment and weapons to drill, exercise and simulate combat situations.

The weapons demonstration will be held outside rain or shine; attendees should dress for the weather. While there is no charge for the program, the normal weekend $5/in-state $7/out-of-state charge per vehicle applies. Fort Harrison State Park is on the corner of Post Rd. and 59th Street in Lawrence, on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Huntington YMCA Garage Sale March 27-28

YMCA Teen Leaders of the Huntington Parkview YMCA will sponsor a spring garage sale! They are asking for people to bring items such as gently used clothing or any sellable goods to the Huntington YMCA at the Parkview residence and leave them in the provided bins. The sale will be held March 27 from 7 a.m. to noon and Sunday, March 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Huntington Parkview YMCA, located at 1160 West and 400 North, behind Parkview Hospital. Proceeds will benefit "Partners with Youth."

Markle Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser underway
The Markle Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a fundraiser to provide special training that will help the firefighters perform their life saving duties and to purchase items for which tax dollars are not available.
Each family making a donation will receive an 8x10 natural color studio portrait. The portraits will be taken at the Markle Fire Station the weekend of April 17. Pets are welcome. Donors will be contacted to schedule a time to have the photo taken that weekend. The fire department will receive and additional $10 for each family photographed.

MARCH 14-20 IS NATIONAL SAFE PLACE WEEK

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 16, 2010) – National Safe Place announces March 14-20, 2010 as National Safe Place Week. This commemorative week highlights the innovative Safe Place program, which brings businesses and volunteers together to provide help and safety to children and teens facing abuse, neglect or serious family problems.

Safe Place is a nationally acclaimed outreach program that makes help readily available to young people in crisis. A network of more than 17,000 partnering businesses and community buildings that appeal to youth – such as fast food restaurants, convenience stores, fire stations, public buses and libraries – are trained to connect youth who might be abused, neglected, thrown away or in immediate danger to their local youth shelter or Host Homes program.

Safe Place programs serve nearly 1,500 communities across the country and are managed by 140 youth-serving agencies in 39 states and the District of Columbia. More than 250,000 youth nationally have been counseled by phone or received help through a business or community location displaying the Safe Place sign since the program’s inception in 1983. Locally, Family Centered Services facilitates the Safe Place program, partnering with 38 businesses/agencies throughout the county that display the yellow and black Safe Place sign.

This week is designated to recognize the participating businesses, community organizations, youth service agencies and volunteers that are part of the National Safe Place program and work for the safety and well being of at-risk youth. They are commended for their hard work and dedication to support the nation’s youth.

Schlachtfest
March 20
The Fort Wayne Maennerchor/Damenchor will sponsor Schlachtfest March 20 at Park Edelweiss at 3355 Elmhurst Drive, Fort Wayne.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served from 7 to 8 p.m. At 8:15 p.m. there will be a short concert by by the Fort Wayne Maennerchor/Damenchor followed by music for dancing. The event is open to the public. Cost is $10 with dinner, $5 without dinner. Children 12 and under are $5 each. The Schlacht (literally "slaughter") Festival, celebrating the first slaughter of the fattened boars in the spring, also symbolizes the end of the winter and the renewing promise of spring. First held by the Männerchor in 1929, this Fort Wayne version of Schlachtfest features a special recipe bratwurst, homemade saurkraut, and all the features of a fine German meal prepared by the women of the Damenchor. The dinner is followed by a performance of the Männerchor/Damenchor and music for dancing.

2010 Senior Discount Cards are now available at the Wells County Council on Aging from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cards are $7 and are not transferable or $8 laminated. Many local vendors participate in this senior discount program. If it is impossible to go to the Council on Aging office to purchase a card, you can receive it by mail Send the agency a stamped, self-addressed legal sized envelope; enclose the $7 per card and the additional $1 fee if lamination is desired. The discount card and list of sponsors will then be mailed to you.
Sale of Senior Citizens Discount Cards are a fundraising project for the local Council on Aging. The money raised by the sale of the cards supports many services the organization has to offer within the Wells County Community, including programs such as transportation and in-home services. One Book, One County!

Calling book enthusiasts of all ages and interests! You can help shape the 2010 One Book, One County community read project at the Wells County Public Library. Last year, the selection committee choose the humorous and inspiring memoir Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam. Now you can help choose the book for 2010.
The first meeting is Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Selection committee members will attend approximately four meetings from March through May and commit to reading the final four to six titles in consideration. Volunteers from teens to seniors and all walks of life are welcome.

Poster contest for students
March is Disability Awareness Month. The Self-Advocate's group of Bi-County Services will be sponsor a poster contest for students in grades two through seven in Adams and Wells Counties.
Students should design a poster showing how people with disabilities can be included in community activities, sports, school activities, etc.
Prizes will be awarded to the top winner in each group. Additional prize drawings will be held for contest participants. All posters must be received no later than March 26, 2010 at 4:00pm.
Contest Criteria and Rules:
• Paintings, drawings, photography, and collages are all acceptable. Entries must be prepared on a 12” X 16” poster board.
• The entered poster MUST deal with the theme of how people with disabilities can be included in community activities, sports, school activities, etc.
Prizes will be awarded to the top winner in each group. Additional prize drawings will be held for contest participants.
Participants will be judged in the following grade categories: second-third grade; fouth-fifth grade and sixth-seventh grade.
All posters MUST BE RECEIVED no later than March 26, 2010 at 4 p.m.
Posters may be dropped of at Bi-County Services between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Slow down dinner
by CAC’s food group March 11
The Not Your Basic Food Group, sponsored by the Creative Arts Council, will sponsor a “Slow Down Dinner” featuring meals done in a crockpot on Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m.
Participants are invited to bring a crockpot and its contents along with your guests to enjoy a dinner with drinks and a small salad provided. A member of the group will need to provide table service (plates and flatware). A copy of the crockpot recipe should be brought for sharing.
Representatives of Bluffton’s Farmers’ Market will be on hand to provide information about dates, times and the wide array of produce and items to be sold in 2010.

Irish Sundae

Members of Dillman United Brethren Church will sponsor an Irish Sundae event Sunday, March 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

2010 Senior Discount Cards are now available at the Wells County Council on Aging from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cards are $7 and are not transferable or $8 laminated. Many local vendors participate in this senior discount program.
If it is impossible to go to the Council on Aging office to purchase a card, you can receive it by mail Send the agency a stamped, self-addressed legal sized envelope; enclose the $7 per card and the additional $1 fee if lamination is desired. The discount card and list of sponsors will then be mailed to you.
Sale of Senior Citizens Discount Cards are a fundraising project for the local Council on Aging. The money raised by the sale of the cards supports many services the organization has to offer within the Wells County Community, including programs such as transportation and in-home services.

Weather spotter class March 10
The National Weather Service will host a class for weather spotters at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 10. The class will be held in the meeting room of the Wells County Annex, 223 W. Washington St.
The two-hour long class will cover identifying warm weather hazards and how to properly identify tornadoes and reporting weather events to the NWS. The class is free and open to anyone.

Fish and Chicken Strip Dinner March 13
Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church will host a Fish and Chicken Strips Dinner Saturday, March 13 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at 1819 Reservation Drive, off Bluffton Road in Waynedale. The dinner will be prepared by Country Chef.
The dinner will include fish and/or chicken strips, potato wedges, applesauce or cole slaw, rolls, drinks and desserts.

Soup and Sandwich Dinner March 14

2010 WELLS COUNTY 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS BB GUN AND RIFLE SAFETY CLUB

WHO CAN JOIN? Youth may become 4-H members when they enter third grade and may continue their membership through the completion of grade 12. A member may continue membership for a maximum of ten (10) years.

AGES & COST BB Gun Safety: Grade 3 and above - Cost $20.00 .22 Caliber Rifle:Grade 6 and above – Cost $25.00 No person will be turned away for financial constraints.Cost includes: (Book - for new members) Equipment, Supplies, Insurance, Awards and Refreshments at Awards Night. If you have more than one youth in the family, the second member is only $15.00. Scholarships available – check with leaders.

LIMITED MEMBERSHIP For safety reasons and to provide adequate instruction, membership will be limited to the first 28 youth in BB and the first 32 youth in Rifle.

SAFETY FIRST The 4-H program teaches firearm safety taught by NRA and 4-H certified instructors. All equipment (Daisy BB guns) Pellet Pistols, and .22 Caliber Rifles will be furnished. Members are not to bring any equipment with them.

SPECIAL DETAILS  Parents are welcome to attend.  In case of bad weather, listen to radio stations K105 or WMEE 93.3 for postponements. Usually if one of the schools cancel, the 4-H event will be postponed.

PARENT HELP Parent help is needed to assist with scoring targets, recording scores, and as range assistants along with set-up and tear-down.

What's UP!!

Parks Department Registrations
March 6
The Parks Department Registration for Pee Wee Soccer, T-ball, Softball, Swim Team, and Baseball will be Saturday, March 6 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Pee wee soccer is for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through grade three. Teams are divided into two age groups. Games are played on Saturday afternoons in the Bluffton City Gym. Registration is at Bluffton City Hall from 9 to 11 a.m. Cost is $20 and includes a T-shirt.
A representative from T-ball, baseball, softball and the Wells County Swim team will be available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the City Hall to accept registration for their leagues.

High School Art
Display at Saint Francis March 7
The School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis will open the 34th annual High School Exhibition Sunday, March 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Art Center off Leesburg Road. Awards will begin at 2 p.m.
High schools from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio will submit up to 10 pieces each by their students. The exhibit will run through March 28.

Oil painting class to begin March 10
The South Adams Senior Center is offering an Adult Beginner and Intermediate Oil Painting Class.
The six week session will begin on Wednesday, March 10, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will continue each Wednesday morning through April 14. Cost for the class is $60. All supplies will be furnished.
Class limit is 10. Gedda Starlin will be the instructor. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, March 3.
The South Adams Senior Center is located at 825 Hendricks St., Berne. The class is open to any adult, male or female, living in the area. Call 260-589-8877 to sign up.

Zanesville Fish and Tenderloin Supper March 13
An All-You-Can Eat Fish and Tenderloin Supper will be held Saturday, March 13 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Zanesville United Methodist Church Tower Life Center at 11811 N. Wayne Street.
The menu will include fish, tenderloin, homemade scalloped potatoes, desserts, applesauce or coleslaw, green beans and bread.
Tickets are $8.50 for adults, $5 for children age six to 10 and free for children under age five. Proceeds will benefit Tri-County Ministries, Boy Scouts and ZUM Computer Technology Fund.
Dan's Fish Fry will provide the fish and tenderloin. Carry-outs will be available.

• Good Things: March 8 and April 12 at 1 p.m. – Release your inner Martha with non-fiction books and activities about entertaining, home décor, crafts, gardening and more. Hands-on fun plus reviews of the latest home books and magazines. Meets the second Monday of each month at 1 p.m. with leaders Teresa Dustman and Lora Kieser.

• Adult Computer Club: March 9 and April 13 at 1 p.m. – Beginners and experts are welcome to learn and help each other on the computer in a friendly round-table atmosphere. Bring your own laptop or share one of ours. Meets the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. with leader Deb Perry.

• Cookbook Club: March 9 and April 13 at 6:30 p.m. – The tastiest club at the library is a gathering of cooks who share recipes, cooking tips and review the newest cookbooks at the library. • Christian Fiction Book Club: March 4 at 7 p.m. -- Two of the top 10 most-read fiction books at our library in 2009 were by author Karen Kingsbury. MILLIONS EXPECTED TO BUY SHAMROCKS TO HELP FIGHT MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY TUCSON

The nation’s first and most successful mobile giving program is now underway with a new twist. The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s venerable Shamrocks Against Dystrophy program is celebrating its 27th year of sharing the luck of the Irish by making it even easier for tens of millions of Americans to participate in the St. Patrick’s Day-themed event that annually raises more than $20 million to help families affected by neuromuscular diseases.
Across America, it’s almost impossible to not see MDA Shamrocks when shopping and dining in March. (See the attached list of Indiana retailers participating in the festive program).
The grass-roots fundraising program owes its success to tens of thousands of cashiers, store associates, waiters and waitresses. They ask hundreds of thousands of patrons every day to each “buy a paper Shamrock to help MDA fight muscle diseases.” Now, for the first time, their “asks” are being reinforced by a text giving option for the more than 250 million cell phone subscribers in the United States and Canada.
“People buying and signing their names on Shamrocks literally transforms thousands of supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants and other retail businesses into festive green and gold settings in honor of St. Patrick’s Day,” says Gerald C. Weinberg, President and CEO of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. “They know the $1 and $5 donations they make at their favorite retailers will add up quickly – especially since the prominent display of personalized Shamrocks challenges other shoppers to help MDA, too.”
The new Text IRISH to 20222 giving option is fun and quick, explains Weinberg. “It takes just seconds to Text IRISH to 20222 on your cell phone to make a $5 donation to MDA that will help speed treatments and cures for muscle diseases. Plus, cell phone donors will receive a link for Shamrocks wallpaper to download for their cell phones. The Shamrocks wallpaper will make friends green with envy, as everyone celebrates St. Patrick’s Day.”
The world’s first text giving effort to automatically thank donors with custom wallpaper for their cell phones, Text IRISH to 20222; and the in-store Shamrocks Against Dystrophy mobile program, are being promoted as a public service by media outlets across the country using special broadcast, print and electronic PSAs. These PSAs remind people that everybody’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day; and that one of the best ways to celebrate is to share the luck of the Irish by buying a Shamrock to help MDA fight muscle diseases.
Phone carriers already participating in the Text IRISH to 20222 campaign for MDA include Alltel, AT&T Wireless, Bell Mobility, Cellular South, Cincinnati Bell, Cricket, Fido Microcel, MTS, Nextel, Rogers Canada, Sasktel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Telus, US Cellular, Verizon Wireless and Virgin Mobile Canada. The texting initiative is being facilitated by the Mobile Giving Foundation and by Give By Cell.

Slow down dinner by CAC’s food group

The Not Your Basic Food Group, sponsored by the Creative Arts Council, will sponsor a “Slow Down Dinner” featuring meals done in a crockpot on Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m.
Participants are invited to bring a crockpot and its contents along with your guests to enjoy a dinner with drinks and a small salad provided. A member of the group will need to provide table service (plates and flatware). A copy of the crockpot recipe should be brought for sharing.
