Wildflower walk April 26

A Wildflower Walk and Brunch will be held at the Gene Stratton-Porter Sylvan Lake Wildflower Wood site on Saturday, April 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $20 for person for the brunch and the walk. The site’s naturalist will lead an interpretive walk after brunch is served. Reservations are needed by April 22 to 260-854-3790. 

Fish and Chicken Dinner April 5
Southern Wells Music Boosters will sponsor their annual Fish and Chicken Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at Southern Wells High School. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids age 10 and younger.
The fish will be prepared by Dan’s Fish Fry.

Swiss Village 5k Run/Walk  April 12
The Swiss Village 5K Lauf/Spaziergang (Run/Walk and Senior Walk) will be held Saturday, April 12, at 9 a.m. This is the first race of the Adams County 5k Run/Walk Challenge. 
Everyone is welcome to participate in the event. Visit Swiss Village’s website at www.swissvillage.org for more details, registration materials, and course map. Pre-register, by March 31 and save $5 off the registration fee. 
The race will take place at the Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion located at 1201 Emmental Drive in Berne. Registration materials may also be picked up at the Museleman Wellness Pavilion Front Desk or the Swiss Village Front Desk. 
Awards will be available for the top three finishers per age group, gender, and overall female and male winners.

Muzzleloading 4-H Shooting Sports Program deadline April 15
The 2014 4-H Muzzleloading Program in Allen County is sponsored by the Allen County 4‑H Shooting Sports Club. The program teaches safe handling of firearms, proper use of equipment, shooting techniques and ethics of good shooters.
 The program will begin Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Allen County Extension Office, 4001 Crescent Ave, Fort Wayne.  Then the program will continue on May 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29 from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. in the Spencerville area.  Class size is limited to 10 participants. This program will be held outside.  Advanced registration is required and due by April 15, 2014. This program is open to all youth grades 3-12. The cost is: $40.00. Equipment will be provided.

Spots still available for IPFW Study Abroad Program
Spots are still available for IPFW’s 12th Study Abroad program for 2014, The Art of Italy.
After flying from Chicago to Rome, travelers will tour the city that is home to Colosseum and Forum, the Vatican Museum with its Sistine Chapel, and the Borghese Palace, full of beautiful sculptures by Bernini and paintings by Caravaggio. The group will then travel by train to Venice, Florence, Ravenna, Pisa, Lucca and more.

Warren Sigma Phi Gamma Luncheon April 6
Members of Warren Beta Delta Chapter of Sigma Phi Gamma sorority will host a Sunday Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the Knight Bergman Center at 132 Nancy Street. Cost for the meal is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12 and free for children ages five and younger. The menu will include baked steak, ham, scalloped potatoes, assorted vegetables, salads, desserts and drinks.

Pre-Prom Extravaganza April 6
The sixth annual Pre-Prom Extravaganza is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Sassafras on Main.
Participants will be able to meet with a beauty consultant, as well as model their dresses. Those who plan to attend are encouraged to invite their friends and family.

Swiss Village Spring Craft Bazaar and Book Fair April 11
A Spring Craft Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, April 11, at Swiss Village Retirement Community auditorium at 1350 West Main Street in Berne.
A variety of handcrafted items will be sold by Swiss Village residents and local craft vendors. For a nominal fee, a light lunch will be served in the CafĂ© Suisse. 
Along with the Spring Bazaar, Swiss Village will host a Book Fair by Books Are Fun, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. the same day in the auditorium. Purchases made at the fair will allow Books Are Fun to donate books to the Kinder Haus Day Care Library.

A free vision and hearing screening young children will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, April 17, at Zanesville United Methodist Church at 11811 N. Wayne Street.
Operation Kid Sight and Indiana Speech and Hearing will offer the screenings for preschoolers.

Singles-Separates Support Group April 2
Singles and Separates Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at  Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion, at 1201 Emmental Drive in Berne. Chaplain Mike Wertenberger will be on hand to answer questions. Non-members and members of the Wellness Pavilion are welcome to attend this free support group. Cancer Services Lapper race registration
The Lapper and Survivors Day Celebration, sponsored by Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Brotherhood Office Park, 6316 Mutual Dr. in Fort Wayne. Registration to participate is now in progress to www.lapper2014.kintera.org.
The fundraiser is  designed to honor those touched by cancer. Each lapper is encouraged to walk as many laps around Brotherhood Place Office Park as they can. 
Walkers who register by May 1 and raise a minimum of $25 will receive a commemorative Lapper t-shirt. Water and fresh fruit will be provided during the walk, which will take place rain or shine. At 11 a.m., after the walk, a Survivors Day Celebration will be held.

Close-Up on Carnivorous plants March 22
Visit the Botanical Conservatory from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Botanical Gardens in Fort Wayne on Saturday, March 22.
Get a closer look at the plants and gardens with an exploratory walk, a craft, and a snack. Carnivorous plants get most of their nutrients from trapping and eating small animals, primarily insects. 
The Conservatory has a terrarium that serves as a home for Venus flytraps, pitcher plants and more of these fascinating creatures.

Student art exhibit at St. Francis
The 38th Annual SOCA Student Exhibit of student art will be presented at the University of Saint Francis April 5-27.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rolland Center, 2701 Spring St., Fort Wayne and at the Lupke Gallery at the North Campus Auditorium 2702 Spring St., Fort Wayne.
The awards ceremony will  be held on April 5, 7:30 p.m. at the North Campus Auditorium 2702 Spring St.
Gallery hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (The galleries will be closed April 18-20 in observance of Easter.)

Markle Library to offer Spring Paws-to-Read
Paws-to-Read Program is being offered at the Markle Branch Library of Huntington County at 197 East Morse Street PAWS-TO-READ @ HCTPL Markle Branch Library every Saturday morning from March 8 through April 26 by appointment only by calling 260-758-3332.
This program is for children between the ages of 6–12 years old. Space is limited and registration is required.  There is no charge for this program.
The mission is to improve the literacy skills of children with the assistance of registered canine reading companions in a fun and relaxed environment. Children will participate in one-on-one sessions in which they practice reading aloud to trained therapy dogs.
Research with therapy animals indicates that children with low self-esteem are often more willing to interact with an animal than another person. Even more, they are inclined to forget about their limitations. 

Postcard Club Spring Show March 28 & 29
The Indianapolis Postcard Club Spring Show will be held at Our Lady of the Greenwood School Gym at 399 S. Meridian Street in Greenwood March 28 and 29. Red Cross Blood Drive March 31 in Ossian
An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held Monday, March 31, from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in the Fellowship Hall, located at 302 N. Metts St. in Ossian.
To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. 
Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Please bring a Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when coming to donate.


Paint & palette event at Blackford Arts Center
 Arts Place, the Blackford County Arts Center will be providing an evening of acrylic painting, light refreshments and a glass of wine on April 12, from 6:30 to  9 p.m. 
The cost is $25 per person. A teaching artist will guide students as they paint with acrylics. This will be a fun and relaxing time for beginners, as well as intermediate painters. Arts Place, the Blackford County Arts Center is located at 107 West Washington St., Hartford City.

CAC offers adult beginning ballet March 11
A beginning ballet class for adults will be offered by the Wells County Creative Arts Council’s School of Ballet beginning on Tuesday, March 11.
The class will meet each Tuesday from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. through the end of April. A signed registration form and first month’s payment is due by March 7, to the Creative Arts Centre at 211 Water St. in Bluffton.

Alzheimer’s meeting in Columbia City March 12
“Know the 10 Signs,” a workshop on detecting the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 12, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Parkview Whitley Hospital, located 1260 E. State Road 205. 
There is no fee to attend the program, but registration is requested by contacting the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.

Second Thursday at FWMA gallery March 13
A Fiber Arts Showcase will be featured at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s Paradigm Gallery on the 2nd Thursday event on March 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Artists   Ronia Krieg and Amy Gunderson will demonstrate fiber arts skills including the intricate method of spinning and dying wool and the Nuno Felting process. Free admission, snacks and a cash bar. More information at www.fwmoa.org

CAC’s St. Patty’s paint-out March 14
A St. Patty’s Paint-Out will be presented by the Creative Arts Council on Friday, March 14, at 6 p.m. in the Balentine Gallery at the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre.
Reuben sandwiches and green beer will be offered while participants create an Irish-themed painting during the evening.

Poneto Chili Supper March 15
A Chili Supper will be held Saturday, March 15 at the Poneto Volunteer Fire Department from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
The menu will include chili, chicken noodle, sloppies, hot dogs, homemade desserts and drinks. A free will donation will be accepted.

Science Fun: The Seedy Side of Things March 15
The Seedy Side of Things will be presented Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Muncie Children’s Museum.
Seeds come in all shapes and sizes. Attendees will look at a variety of different seeds and explore all of the properties these tiny beings have to offer. 
Explore the inner workings of a seed by dissecting them to see what exactly they have to offer. Learn that big things can come in small packages. 
Pre-registration is not required and the program is free with regular Conservatory admission (members and volunteers admitted free) Cost is $5 per adult, $3 per child (age 3-17). Children age 2 and under free. For more info, call (260) 427-6440.

Zanesville Ham and Bean Supper March 15
The Zanesville Lions Ham and Bean Supper will be held Saturday, March 15 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Lions Clubhouse.
Cost is $5 for adults. $3 for children age age 6-12 and free for children age 5.
The menu will include ham and beans, cornbread, two sides and drink.

The Old Fort Coin Club will sponsor a Coin and Currency Show Sunday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Allen County Fairgrounds.
There will be over 50 tables of numismatic material, free parking, free admission and food will be available.

Friends of the Shelter meeting March 10
Friends of the Shelter, the organization that provides support for the Bluffton/Wells County Animal Shelter, will meet at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 10 in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall at 128 E. Market St.
Items on the agenda include shelter operations and final planning on 2014 events.

Living with Loss Support Group March 11
Living with Loss Support Group will be meeting for seven consecutive weeks beginning March 11 at 5:45 p.m. at the Welcome Center in the Bluffton Senior Villas at 301 LaMar St., Suite 300 in Bluffton.
The group is for those grieving the loss of someone they love and who are interested in learning to cope with the grief.

Fiber fest & spin in at Portland March 8 & 9
On the weekend of March 8 and 9, the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland will host a Fiber Fest & Spin In.
Hours on Saturday, March 8, will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. while hours on Sunday  March 9, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 and parking is free. Events will include fiber art classes, a petting zoo and storytelling a Border Collie demo, sheep shearing, artist and food vendors and demos all day.

Women in Agriculture meeting March 11
Purdue Extension Women in Agriculture will sponsor a regional meeting Tuesday, March 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Purdue Extension White County office at 12-N., 25-E, Reynolds, Indiana in White County. This regional meeting will explain the role of women in making a family farm profitable and give attendees an opportunity to network and share experiences with others in similar positions.
Topics will consist of a palmer amaranth update, the benefits of on-farm research and Code Red Book notebook. Registration of $30 per person is due March 10.
