Rainbow Poets are sponsoring a contest where the grand prize is $1,000.
Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by contest director Michael Thomas. The contest is free to enter and open to poets of any age. Fifty prizes will be awarded. Entries must be received by Sept. 30 and may be submitted by mail to Free Poetry Contest, 7308 Heritage Dr., Mt. Vernon, IN, 47620 or at www.rainbowpoets.com. Those mailing entries need to include a stamped return envelope.

The Indy Jazz Fest has unveiled the artists taking the stage as part of the festival’s week long Sunset Series as it prepares to kick off its 13th year. Held over a six-day period Sept. 12-17 in many locations. The full schedule and ticket information is available at the festival’s newly redesigned website: www.indyjazzfest.net
The 2011 Indy Jazz Fest Sunset Series continues Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Christel de Haan Fine Arts Center at University of Indianapolis (1400 E. Hanna Ave.) with the Indy Jazz Fest Band presented by WICR.

Bark before Dark Sept. 14
The Bark Before Dark bone hunt will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Washington Park at 6:30 p.m.
Bring your dog to sniff out the hidden bones and treats. Afterward visit with area pet vendors and sign up for drawings to win other prizes. A wiener dog race is planned if enough show up. All dogs must be kept on a leash and owners are responsible to clean up after their pets. Call 824-6069 to register
‘Willy Wonka’ to open at Pulse with youth cast Sept. 16
“Willy Wonka Jr.,” the musical, will be on stage at the Pulse Opera House in Warren on the evenings of Sept. 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29 30 and Oct. 1, at 8 p.m.
Admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. A $2 discount on adult tickets with the donation of a nonperishable item for the Huntington Food Pantry. Phone reservations are accepted at 260-375-7017 or at www.pulseoperahouse.org.
For this production around 1,000 students will be able to attend this musical through special school matinees.
