What's Up

Boys & Girls Club Chili Cook-Off Oct. 27
The Wells Community Boys and Girls Club will sponsor the second-annual Dan Weldy Chili Cook-Off Saturday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 1410 S. Wayne Street in Bluffton.

There will be six different kinds of chili to taste, with no limit on the amount of chili you can eat. Drinks will be provided. There will also be a silent auction.

The six chefs to present their chili will be Jason Baker, Tony Chaney, Steve Gerber, Scott Holiday, Sam McAfee and Paul Reiff. Those attending will be able to vote for their favorite chili. Cost is $25 per couple, $15 for single and $1 for children age 18 and younger.

Trick or Trunk Oct. 27

Members of Southern Wells Community Church will sponsor a Trick or Trunk event at Southern Wells School parking lot Saturday, Oct. 27, from 4:30-7 p.m.  Kids come in their costumes and go from trunk to trunk for games, treats and goodie bags.

A meal will also provided free of charge. The event will be held inside in case of rain. Call 765-728-2154 with any questions.

Sigma Phi Gamma Black Raspberry Pie Sale begins Oct. 27
Sigma Phi Gamma annual black raspberry pie sale will start Saturday, Oct. 27. Call 824-2229 to place an order. Cost is $11 each.

Proceeds go to local charity projects including A Friend’s House.

Fish Fry in Hartford City Oct. 28

The Blackford County 4-H Fairboard and the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a fish fry Sunday, Oct. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Blackford County 4-H Building at 310 E. Park Ave., Hartford City.

Cost is $8 for adults (age 13 and older), $4 for those ages six to 12 and free for children age 5 and younger. For more information call 765-348-3213.

St. John Lutheran Church Dinner Oct. 28

St. John Lutheran Church (Bingen) will sponsor a church dinner Sunday, Oct. 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The meal will include swiss steak and broasted chicken. Cost is $7.50 for adults, $3 for children ages six to 12 and free for those age five and younger. Drive-through and carry-outs will be available. There will also be a bazaar and bake sale held during the event.

Limberlost Spooktacular Nature Oct. 20
Join the staff at Limberlost State Historic Site Saturday, Oct. 20 to interact with some live creepy animals and attend the “School of Scare” Skull Class to become a Limberlost skull scholar.

This family event will also host many Halloween-themed games including ‘Vampires of the Limberlost’ guessing game that helps identity what blood-thirsty things are living in the mighty Limberlost swamp. There will be Halloween candy and prizes for everyone.

The event, from 6 to 8 p.m., is $3 per child and free for adults. Children in costume will also go home with a goodie bag full of Halloween treats.

Kevin Ford Launch to be broadcast live Oct. 23
Come and watch at the Montpelier Civic Center the live broadcast of Kevin Ford’s launch on a Russian Soyuz capsule with two Russian cosmonauts to the International Space Station on Oct. 23. Kevin grew up in Montpelier and still considers Montpelier his hometown. He is to remain in orbit as the commander of the International Space Station until March 2013. At 6:30 a.m. a special message Kevin recorded just for our community will be played. The launch will be at 6:51 a.m. Donuts, coffee and Tang will be provided.

Composting Workshop Oct. 23
The Purdue Extension Service of Blackford County will host a composting workshop Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Blackford County Fairgrounds in Hartford City.
Those attending will learn the principles and the practice of composting and how to turn yard waste into rich soil.

Scrapbooking on Monday nights

Fish and Chicken Supper Oct. 16 at Sonlight
Members of Sonlight Wesleyan Church will sponsor an all-you-can-eat Dan’s Fish and Chicken Supper Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, located at 2350S. Ind. 1, Bluffton.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children ages six through 12 and free for children ages five and younger.

Hunter Education Course offered Oct. 16-18
A hunter education course will be offered at no charge Oct. 16, 17 and 18 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Ouabache State Park Lake Lodge.

Instructors will be Mike and Jodi Pinkerton, Rich Falk, Darrell Reynolds, Tracy Myers and others. The course is sponsored by the IDNR. For pre-registration and more information call 824-0926. Those under age 16 must be accompanied by a guardian. Attendance at all classes is required for certification.

St. John Lutheran Church rummage sale Oct. 18-20
Members of St. John Lutheran Church, Flatrock, will sponsor a rummage sale Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the gym at 12912 Franke Road, Monroeville.
There will be a $2 bag and bulk sale Saturday morning or as much as you want for $5. For more information call 260-639-6200.

Norwell Show Choir Auction and Dinner Oct. 20
Members of the Norwell Show Choir will sponsor an auction and dinner Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the high school auditorium and cafeteria.

There will be more than 100 items to bid on during the live auction. There are also more than 75 items in the silent auction.

Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. The silent auction bidding will open at 5:30 p.m. The show choir will perform at 6 p.m. Bidding for the auction will start at 6:30 p.m.

Items in the raffle include a Chandler Harnish package, iPad, large screen TV and a Vera Bradley Travel set.

Cost for the dinner is $7 per person. It will include a loaded baked potato or a hot dog along with a drinnk ice cream and cookie.

Veterans Honor Benefit Dinner Oct. 19
A benefit dinner to fund the Veterans Honor Blanket Program will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at  the American Legion at 101 Madison Street, Decatur.

The dinner will include baked pork chop, potato, vegetable, roll and dessert. Cost is $8 per person. Dine-in or carry-out. The location is handicap accessible.

Proceeds will be used to cover the cost of an American flag blanket that will cover the veteran one last time by the hospice nurse and given to their loved ones as a keepsake.

South Adams Senior Luncheon Oct. 24
The South Adams Senior Luncheon will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24, at noon. Cost is $6 per person. Reservations are needed by Oct. 22. The menu will include baked ham, cheesy potatoes, California Blend, chocolate cake, roll and butter, coffee and lemondae. Dovenna Fosnaugh will play the piano during the luncheon.

Pumpkin Dunken Oct. 24
Pumpkin Dunken will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Bluffton Middle School pool from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
 
Play in a pool filled with pumpkins and take one home to carve. Call to 824-6069 to pre-register to get a count on how many pumpkins to bring. Small admission due at the door, about $3 per person. Youth must come with an adult.

Youth baseball fundraiser Oct. 13
A fundraiser for Northern Wells Young Guns baseball team will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Tyeger’s Pizza located in Villa North Mall. All proceeds will go to help fund the team trip to Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, New York, next July. Call 260-273-7937.

Great Pumpkin Hunt & Hayride Oct. 13
Bring the family to Lancaster Park Saturday, Oct. 13, for a flashlight egg hunt, smores, and spooky hayrides. Don’t forget a treat bag and flashlight for each child to find the 2,000 Halloween eggs hidden in the park.  Hayrides will start after the hunt so dress warm or bring blankets. Hunt starts at 7:30 sharp! This is a free event.

For those arriving early, there will be decorative wooden pumpkin boxes the family can build and take home. Size small is $3, medium is $5 and large is $8. Be sure to bring a small hammer with you. For more information call 824-6069.

Co-Ed Teen and Adult Soccer offered in October
The Bluffton Parks and Recreation Department is offering free fall soccer for teens and adults through the month of October. Games will be held each Saturday at 3 p.m. in October at the Bluffton Elementary School. Call Laurie at 824-6069.

Mum Walk Oct. 13
Tom and Mary Lou Wooward of Ossian will host their annual Mum Walk Saturday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 301 Highland Ave., Ossian.  They have eight acres in Ossian with over 700 mums along with other perennials, and annuals, in their gardens. Their gardens were featured in the September issue of Indiana Gardens Magazine. There is no charge to attend the walk.

Pulled Pork Dinner Oct. 13 at Poneto
The Poneto United Methodist Women in Mission will sponsor a freewill donation Pulled Pork Sandwich, Soup and Dessert Dinner Saturday, Oct. 13 from 4:30-7 p.m. The dinner will be available in the Poneto firehouse located at the corner of Hwy 218 and Meridian.  Local, state and national candidates running for office are invited to come. There are usually five to 12 candidates who will greet those in attendance and will discuss their positions on pertinent politics.

Through the event the Women in Mission have raised thousands of dollars for mission ministries all over the world with similar dinners. All donations will go to missions that are local or international.

Living Faith Missionary to celebrate 80th anniversary Oct. 14
On Oct. 14 Living Faith Missionary Church will celebrate its 80th anniversary. All former church attendees and families are welcome to attend the service at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday school at 9 a.m. A meal will follow. The church was located in Yoder. In 1932 it was hit by lightning and a tornado. It was relocated to its current location at 17718 Bluffton Road. For more information call 260-622-7103.

Ossian Psi Iota Xi Basket Bingo Oct. 15

Members of Ossian Psi Iota Xi Sorority will sponsor a Basket Bingo Monday, Oct. 15, at the Ossian United Methodist Fellowship Center in Ossian. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. and games will start at 7 p.m. There will be 20 games of bingo played. Cost is $20 per person.

Many of the Longenberger prize baskets are retired, Collector Club or Hostess Only baskets. A Traditions Pottery Bow with lid and a Traditions iron stand with pie baked by Helen Witte will also be included in the prize offerings.
