Earn a free book for yourself or to donate to a local school:
Whether you prefer to snuggle in a warm blanket with a chilling mystery or hibernate until spring with a sunny gardening guide, you can earn a free book by completing a few simple challenges in the annual Winter Reading Program during February at the Wells County Public Library. This year the program celebrates the 2010 Olympics with “Go for the Gold!”. Check out these programs for adults, teens and children and sign up to play along in February.
Adults & Teens Bingo:
Play WCPL Bingo and “Go for the Gold!”. Adults and teens should stop by the library to pick up a special bingo card. Each square offers an interesting challenge to complete during the month of February. Complete the challenges to get four down, across, or diagonally or four corners. After successfully completing the program you may select a book for yourself OR you can donate a book to one of the four elementary schools in Wells County. Forms and rules will be available on February 1, 2010 at the main library or at the Ossian Branch.
Kids & families build a snowman:
Families with children will work together to earn a keepsake book during the Winter Reading Program. This multigenerational program encourages families to read together or separately as a team to complete the easy challenge. Receive hot chocolate just for signing up and then read to “build a snowman”. Forms and rules will be available on February 1, 2010 in the children’s room at the main library or at the Ossian Branch.

Every Child Ready to Read: free workshops at the library
Every Child Ready to Read just may take your long-held notion of the “right way” to read to your children and turn it upside down. The staff of the children’s department of the Wells County Public Library is eager to share the latest research about developing early literary skills in a series of free workshops for parents, caregivers and teachers.
What is it?
Every Child Ready to Read is a new way to read to young children. Studies have shown that how we read to our children is even more important than how much we read to them. It is not a program to teach children how to read. Every Child Ready to Read is a program to help them develop fundamental skills that will make learning to read easier.
The library staff felt the results of this program, for all socio-economic levels, were so remarkable they have incorporated Every Child Read to Read into their outreach programming.
Much of what we know about how the brain works in young children has advanced in recent years because of new technologies, such as MRI and PET scans. Some of the research used to create this program came from comparisons of the developing brain of healthy, nurtured children to institutionalized orphans who were neglected in infancy. Other studies include mapping the development of brain synaptic density, as well as evaluations by physicians, teachers, and the parents themselves.
Every Child Ready to Read workshops will be held on three consecutive Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. Each session will concentrate on a particular age. A light supper will be served. The sessions will end by 7:30 p.m.

Bluffton Parks Dept Events for February!
2- Special Toddler Event11-noon
The first Tuesday of every month the Park’s Department will offer special Toddler activities. Bring your wee ones on Tuesday February 2nd from 11-noon to create an oh-so-sweet valentine treat to give to the people they love the most. Your child will have fun making wonderfully simple crafts that will melt your heart and cover the front side of your fridge.
8- Winter Gymnastics Registration 6:30-8 p.m.
If you want your child to have fun while working on their strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power and discipline, then gymnastics is the sport for them. Register your 3 yr old -6th grader at the city hall on February 8th from 6:30-8pm. Cost is $30 or discounted to $25 for city residents for 8 lessons and a t-shirt. Classes are held March 8-11th and 15-18th. Students ages 3-pre-K are 6:15-7pm, grades K-2 will tumble from 7-8pm and grades 3-6th will go 8-9pm. Class size is limited and every group will practice tumbling on the floor, vault and balance beam.
11- Valentine Senior Lunch 12-1:30 p.m.
Come and enjoy a hearty lunch on Thursday February 11th prepared by the culinary art students at Bluffton High School. Lunch is served from 12-1:30 at the First United Methodist Church and pre-registration is required by calling 824-6069 by February 8th. In honor of Lincoln’s birthday month, Brian Dirck from Anderson University will be talking about his life and law practices. Cost is $6.

Ticket sales begin Monday, January 5th in the City Clerk/Treasurer’s office at 128 E. Market St.

Gentlemen dig out your polyester leisure suit (we know you kept it) and hurry on down to the City Clerk Treasurer's office in City Hall to purchase your tickets starting January 5th. This super-groovy dance is held on Sunday Feb. 21st from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Wells County 4-H Building (co-sponsored with the 4-H). Enjoy an evening of music, refreshments, door prizes, photos and treat bags. Escorts may be father, grandfather, or other significant adult role model. Dress for this event is theme based or dressy. The price for a couple is $10.00 ($3.00 each additional daughter), the look on your daughters face when you embarrass her with your dance moves… priceless.

2010 Senior Discount Cards are now available at the Wells County Council on Aging from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cards are $7 and are not transferable or $8 laminated. Many local vendors participate in this senior discount program.
If it is impossible to go to the Council on Aging office to purchase a card, you can receive it by mail Send the agency a stamped, self-addressed legal sized envelope; enclose the $7 per card and the additional $1 fee if lamination is desired. The discount card and list of sponsors will then be mailed to you.
Sale of Senior Citizens Discount Cards are a fundraising project for the local Council on Aging. The money raised by the sale of the cards supports many services the organization has to offer within the Wells County Community, including programs such as transportation and in-home services.
If you are a business owner and are interested in sponsoring a discount, contact Margaret Whitesel at 824-1070.
