Bluffton Farmer’s Market open

The Farmer’s Market is open at the Dutch Mill Plaza (Main Street at the bridge) on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Current features include sweetcorn, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, peaches, flowers, fresh baked goods, BBQ sauce, woodworking products, handmade crafts, and more. Muncie’s own Jennie Devoe will perform on the Canan Commons Stage at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of her set at 8:30 p.m. a spectacular lighted interactive display will be launched. It will be the coernerstone of Muncie’s celebration of its 150th birthday.

Winter Coat Collection Oct. 3

The United Methodist Churches of Wells and Huntington Counties will collect winter coats for the three school districts in Wells County and one in Huntington County

Those in Bluffton wanting to drop off coats may do so Oct. 3 at the First United Methdodist Church at 325 W. Washington Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Those living in Southern Wells can drop off coats Oct. 3 at Liberty Center United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Those living in Northern Wells may drop off coats during the week at Ossian United Methodist Church from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

After Oct. 3 the coats will be divided evenly between the schools.

Coats being donated should be new or gently used with no rips or tares.

Heritage Festival Oct. 3 & 4

The 13th annual Jay County Heritage Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum grounds, 903 East Main Street, Portland. The theme this year is “Cruise to the Past — Auto Dealerships of Jay County.”  Admission and activities are free of charge.

Kettle-cooked ham and beans with corn bread will be served on Saturday. Kettle-cooked chicken and noodles with mashed potatoes will be available on Sunday. Cost of these meals, including a cupcake and drink is $6.  

Foods served on both days include foot long hot dogs and Coney dogs, burger baskets, ice cream Sundaes and floats, cotton candy, and caramel corn.  Sugar cream and Dutch apple pie will be available at the ice cream booth.

Sunday’s entertainment will include vocalists Erica Frazee and Annie Ford, the Asbury Praise Band, and the Adams County Cloggers.  A dedication ceremony for the museum’s new addition will  be held at 1:15. 

Huntington and Markle Libraries plan Halloween events

The Huntington library will host a program on Halloween folklore and urban legend from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8. Linda Urshel, professor of English at Huntington University,  will talk about the beliefs, traditions, and urban tales surrounding the autumn holiday. This program is free and geared towards teens and adults.

The annual pumpkin decorating contest will begin Oct. 16 at both the Huntington and Markle libraries. Decorated pumpkins can be brought to the either library Oct. 16 through Oct. 20 and will be on display by the respective circulation desks. Pumpkins will be judged by age range (adult, child, family, and staff) and by category (best overall, most unusual, most colorful, funniest, prettiest, scariest, and cutest). Patrons can vote on the pumpkins Oct. 21 and 22 in Huntington and Oct. 22 and 23 in Markle. Carved pumpkins will not be accepted.

A program about paranormal research will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at the Huntington library. The ParaSisters of Fort Wayne, who are experienced paranormal investigators, will be present to talk about ghost hunting, hauntings, and more. This program is geared towards teens and adults and is free as well.

Toddlers to visit fire department Oct. 6

Those attending Toddler Time on Oct. 6 will visit the Bluffton Fire Department.

 The group will start in the city gym at 11 a.m. with free play and social time then head over to the fire station for a visit. Parents can bring a camera to take pictures.

Toddler Time begins Oct. 1

The Bluffton Parks Department’s Toddler Time in the city gym will begin Thursday, Oct. 1 through March 31, 2016.

The Bluffton City Gym will be open every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon for people to bring their tots to burn off some energy.

This is a free drop in program that will give young children a chance to play with others their age in a large open space. Balls will be made available in the storage closet at the East end of the gym when the children arrive. 

Please note that this is not a staff facilitated event and parents are responsible for their children. 

The first Tuesday of each month the Parks Department will offer a special tour or activity. 

Sign in on the wooden door each visit and turn off the gym lights if you are the last to leave. For more information call 824-6069.

Health Fair in Berne Oct. 2

A wellness fair sponsored by the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion and open to the public, will take place at on Friday, Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Available will be a variety of free assessments including blood pressure checks, chair massages, hand grip strength tests, and hearing screenings, and lipid profile checks. Bluffton Regional Medical Center will be offer Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP) test for $25, Thyroid Panel (including TSH and Free T4) for $20, Hemogram for $15, Free Lipid Profile and Free Prostate Specific Antigen tests. Fasting is required for all tests expect for the Hemogram. Flu shots will be provided by Walgreens Pharmacy of Bluffton for a nominal fee.

Those attending may participate in bingo during the wellness fair at 11 a.m. for a chance to win one of several donated prizes.

Dan’s Fish Fry fundraiser Oct. 3

Fish Fry Oct. 3 at Twin Bridges

Twin Bridge Conservation Club in Mt. Zion will sponsor a Fish Fry Saturday, Oct. 3 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

The meal will include fish, chicken or tenderloin. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for

Weekday Walking program to begin Oct. 15

Bluffton Parks Department Weekday will begin the Walking Program Monday through Friday from 9-10:30 a.m. on October 15.

Free Ice Cream Social & Music Sept. 27

The Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion will sponsor a free Ice Cream Social for seniors age 55 and older at the Wellness Pavilion at 1201 Emmental Drive in Berne on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 2-4 p.m. Music will be provided by Gabe Bailey. 

Gabe Bailey, an eighth grader at South Adams Middle School, began performing publicly at the 2013 Swiss Days Berne’s Got Talent. Since winning that, at age 11, he has been busy playing with the First Mennonite Worship band and performing in a number of different venues.

Swiss Stitchers Quilt Guild to meet Sept. 28

Swiss Stitchers will meet Sept.  28 at 7 p.m. in the Social Corner. Gail Kuhn will be the presenter. Friends and show and tell are expected.

 Instead of a bus trip this year the group will meet at the Berne Senior Center on Oct. 3 at 8:30 a.m. till the last one goes home, for a day of sewing and fellowship. Kathy Diveley will teach memeber how to piece a quilt. Supplies will be: Layer cake or 30 to 40   -10” squares from your stash; Background or zinger fabric( one color) 2.5 yards;(if using for border would get 3 yards); ( two colors)1.25 X 2  (1.5 each if using as border also); coordinating fabric for large border  if desired(2 yards); a ruler long enough to cut the 10” square at an angle; machine and basic quilting supplies.

 Also, those attending  should bring a dish to share and a snack.

There is no cost to attend for those who helped at the quilt show. If you want to attend and did not help at the show the cost is $10.

Cancer Services fundraiser Oct. 2 at FWMA

Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana will present an auction and fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

There will be a live art auction, appetizers, music to listen to and tours of the current exhibits. The doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is $25.

Genealogy Society to meet Sept. 19

Members of the Wells County Genealogy Society will meet Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Historical Museum.  This is a change of date from Saturday Sept. 26.

Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience Sept. 19-20

 The Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience will be held at Fort Harrison State Park Sept. 19-20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Indianapolis.

Now in its seventh year, it will feature a different type of paddling activity among its roughly 50 activities.

 Six “voyageur” canoes, will be used instead of the standard canoes and kayaks of past years. All paddling will still be done on Delaware Lake, the three acre lake  

Activities include archery, target shooting, mountain biking, disc golf, and much more. Participants can bring their own food or purchase food at from on-site vendors. All food vendors will offer credit card payment options. 

 The Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience is presented by the DNR and the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation.

Food Demonstration for seniors Sept. 28

Pioneer Festival Sept. 26-27

The Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival will be held at Hier’s Park in Huntington Sept. 26 and 27.

The festival celebrates Indiana life in the early-to mid-1800s, when Native Americans, white settlers and French traders populated the area. Psi Otes’ ‘Cork & Canvas’ Sept. 29

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m., the Bluffton Psi Iota Xis will be sponsoring a “Cork & Canvas” opportunity at the Arts, Commerce & Visitors Centre in Bluffton.

Glass and Palette Class Sept. 19

Arts Place, Portland Center, will offer a Glass and Palette class “Paint Like Van Gogh” with Avon Waters on Saturday, Sept. 19 from noon to 3 p.m. The Portland Center of Arts Place is located at 131 East Walnut Street.

Pumpkin Festival at Lincoln Ridge Sept. 19-20

the 28th annual Pumpkin Festival at Lincoln Ridge will be held over seven weekends beginning with Apple Harvest Days on the weekend of Sept. 19 and 20.

Offered will be wagon rides, a maze to explore and a variety of games. There also is a zip line and races. Festival type food also will be available.

Admission is $8.50 with children 3 and younger free. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Heartland in concert Sept. 20

The singers of Heartland Sings are preparing a light-centric program: “Light Eternal: Mozart Requiem & More,” which includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s choral masterpiece, the “Requiem Mass in D minor, K. 626.” This work is the centerpiece of an afternoon of classical and contemporary masterworks that will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Plymouth Congregational Church, 501 W. Berry St. in Fort Wayne. Tickets are $20 general admission.

Heartland Sings is a professional, non-profit vocal production company based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Founded by Nance in 1997, Heartland has since grown into a broad-based vocal arts organization.

Fish & tenderloin dinner Sept. 23

Dan’s all you can eat fish and tenderloin dinner will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the family fellowship center of the Ossian United Methodist Church. Senior Exploration begins Sept. 23

The Bluffton Parks Department is offering a five-week program designed for adults who are interested in continued learning and social interaction. It will be held on  Mondays starting Sept. 28 through Oct 26. There is a one-time fee of $12 due with registration by Sept. 23. It will be held at the Boys and Girls Club at 1410 Wayne Street. 

There will be a 10 a.m. class and an 11 a.m. class. Those participating will select one class per hour to attend all five weeks.

Members of the Bluffton High School Class of 1950 will hold their 65th reunion during Street Fair week on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Corner Depot Restaurant at noon.

Local artists sought for Art Bazaar Sept. 26

The Parks Department is looking for local artists to participate in the annual Art Bazaar on Saturday Sept. 26 during Street Fair Week.

‘The Marvelous Wonderettes’ by FW’s Civic

Tickets are now on sale for the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre’s musical production of “The Marvelous Wonderettes” to be on stage at the Arts United Center on Sept. 19, 20, 25, 226, 27.

The music features songs made popular by The Chordettes. Leslie Beauchamp will direct and choreograph the Fort Wayne production.

David Green lecture Sept. 17

NPR host David Greene will give a behind the scenes look at National Public Radio and Morning Edition at a lecture on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Fort Wayne Sweetwater Performance Theatre, 5501 US  Highway 30 W.

Saturday art  classes at USF

Spots are still available in the Saturday morning arts classes offered through the School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne.

Good Old Days Across the Decades Sept. 11

Kingston Residence will host the 8th  “Good Old Days -Across the Decades” Event on Friday, Sept. 11 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at 7515 Winchester Road.

Additionally, The Old Fort Model A Car Club will have a number of cars on display and local Waynedale News columnist and shop owner Lois Levihn will bring quilts to exhibit. Kingston will offercorn hole, homemade caramel corn made over an open fire, tasty beef stew, biscuits and ice cream. 

The event is a free event with donations being accepted toward the Waynedale Trails and Sidewalks Initiative. 

This local committee has donated over $20,000 toward the design and engineering of both trails and sidewalks slated for Bluffton Road between Lower Huntington and Winchester Roads in 2016-2017. A new ramp was installed at the Fairfield/Lower Huntington intersection as part of recent roadway improvements. The ramp intersects with the St. Mary’s Pathway that runs through Foster Park to Tillman Park. 

Five Points Fall Festival Sept. 12

The Friends of Five Points School will host the 19th annual Fall Festival Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The restored 1876 schoolhouse is believed to be the only one room, two story brick schoolhouse in Indiana.

A meal will be available starting at 11 a.m. It will include pulled pork sandwiches, ham and beans (cookied over an open fire), fried cornbread, fried sauerkraut, hot dogs, chips, applesauce, cookies and homemade ice cream.

There will also be old time games and activities for the kids. Everything is free, however, a free will offering will be taken during the event. All proceeds will be used to further restore and maintain the schoolhouse and grounds.

Liberty Center Day Sept. 13

On Saturday, Sept. 13, beginning at noon Liberty Center will be celebrating Liberty Center Day at the Liberty Center Park.

Planners promise games and fun for everyone. Music will be provided by the Mountain Dewe Boys, Dave Liles Band, Jamey Lewis, Colton Moser and Austin City Band.

Food for purchase will be available and there is no admission charge.

Hunter Education courses will be offered at no charge Sept. 15, 17 and 18 (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Ouabache State Park Lake Lodge.

State historical society’s teacher workshops

The Indiana Historical Society is offering a free one day teacher workshop in preparation for the 2016 State Bicentennial with four dates to chose from.

Teachers will be offered resources and content that will help them to easily integrate Indiana history into their existing curricula. Dates offered are Sept. 9, Sept. 24, Nov. 6 and Nov. 19. The day will include the workshop, lunch, substitute teacher reimbursement, gift card to offset travel expenses, free book and more.

Ossian Nazarene 5K Run/Walk Sept. 12

The Ossian Nazarene Church will sponsor at 5K Run/Walk Saturday, Sept. 12 at the church at 302 N. Metts.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The Run/Walk will start at 8:45 a.m. The race will begin and end at the church. Entry fee is $20 for all races and includes a t-shirt if registered online by Sept. 3 at ossiannaz.org.

There will be race divisions for male, female and 18 and under, 19-25, 26-35, 46-55, and 56 and older.

All proceeds will benefit KAIO Ossian Nazarene Youth Ministry.

Toddler music offered by CAC Sept. 14

The Creative Arts Council of Wells County is offering an 8-week toddler music class for children ages 1 1/2 to 4 years of age to be held on Monday mornings, beginning Sept. 14.

The Symphonic Seasons Class will meet from 10 to 10:45 a.m. with instructor Cindy Lemmen at the Arts Commerce & Visitors Centre. Tuition is $4 for one child and $58 for each additional sibling. Each student will receive a CD of music and a rhythm instrument to take home.

Instructor Lemmen has 12 years of experience in teaching the Rhapsody, Rhythm and Rhyme programs.

On Sunday, Sept. 13 Fort Wayne 12 attractions will host “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown” from noon to 5 p.m.

Alzehimer’s Support Group to meet Sept. 2

The Wells County Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group will meet at the First United Methodist Church, located at 325 W. Washington St. in Bluffton, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, not July 2.

Star Gazing Sept. 12

A star gazing night is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12 at Lancaster Park at 8 p.m.

There will be a variety of telescopes to view Saturn, Venus, the stars and more. 

This program is recommended for ages eight and older. Donations will be accepted for the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society.
