Lions Club  Breakfast Aug. 30
A breakfast will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Lions Club in Montpelier during the Montpelier Jamboree. The club is located at the corner of High and Jefferson Streets. The menu will include sausage gravy and biscuits, hash browns, juice and coffee. A free will donation will be accepted at the event. Proceeds will go toward a furnace replacement.

Sauder Village to celebrate Labor Day
Sauder Village will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday for the holiday weekend. Hours are Saturday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  On Sunday only, kids 16 and under receive free admission. Sauder Village is offering free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day.

Trail of Courage Sept. 20-21
The 39th annual Trail of Courage Living History Festival will be held Sept. 20-21 at Rochester, Indiana.
There will be food cooked over wood fires, period music and dance, traditional craftgs, historic camps abnd trading, canoe rides on the river and more.

Bingo at Montpelier Lions Club Aug. 29
Members of the Montpelier Lions Club will host a Bingo event Friday, Aug. 29 at the corner of High and Jefferson Streets during the annual Jamboree celebration. Early birds can arrive at 6:30 p.m. Regular bingo will begin at 7 p.m. The kitchen will be open at 5 p.m.  According to state law only those age 18 and older will be able to enter the building that evening.

Alzheimer’s Support Group to meet Sept. 3
The Wells County Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group will meet at the First United Methodist Church at 325 W. Washington St. at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3. The meeting is intended for  caregivers and family members of a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other dementia related diseases. Those in attendance will also be given the opportunity to share their experiences of caring for their loved one and to ask questions of other caregivers in attendance. Exhibits at  St. Francis gallery
Two gallery exhibits have been announced for the Lupke Gallery at the University of Saint Francis for this fall.
From Sept. 10 through Oct. 15, the works of Hoosier Plein Air Artist Louis Bonsib will be featured. A reception will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. a lecture about the work will be presented by Douglas Runyan and Fred Doloresco.

American Legion to start flagpole fund
Grover Sheets American Legion Post 111 is in need of a new flagpole. The current one has proudly flown Old Glory for many, many years, obviously through all types of weather, but its years of service will soon come to an end.
Along with the new flagpole will also be the need to replace the cement securing the pole in place. The Legion is looking at a cost of $4,000 for the project.
Because of that, the Legion has established a Flagpole Fund for anyone wishing to contribute. Checks can be made out to American Legion Post 111 and mailed to the finance officer, Rodger Popplewell; 415 E. Cherry St., Bluffton IN 46714 and note “Flagpole Fund” on the memo line.

Red Cross blood donation dates in September
The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help ensure a stable and diverse blood supply by giving blood in honor of National Sickle Cell Awareness Month this September. To help increase donations during the month of September, those who come out to donate blood or platelets throughout the month will receive a coupon by email for a free haircut at participating Sport Clips locations. Pork chop dinner & pie auction Sept. 4
The Ossian Economic Revitalization Committee will sponsor a smoked pork chop dinner Thursday, Sept. 4, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Ossian Days event tent located downtown Ossian. Carry out is available on the west side of the tent on Craig Street.
The dinner includes smoked pork chop, baked potato, applesauce, roll, sweet treat, plus iced tea or lemonade (dining in) and bottled water (carry out). Tickets are $9 in advance or $9.50 on the dinner date.
Advanced tickets are available at Lighted Gardens, Ossian Do It Best Hardware, Ossian State  Bank, Ossian Town Hall, the Ossian branches of PNC Bank and iAB Financial Bank or any committee member.
At 6 p.m. the Helen Witte pie auction will be held.

All proceeds benefit the Ossian’s downtown revitalization.

Learn About Daylilies Thursday
 The Wells County Master Gardeners will feature a program on daylilies on Thursday evening, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at the 4-H Park Community Center in Bluffton. The speakers will be from Patchwork Perennials, a small family-operated perennial plant nursery near Hartford City. It specializes in daylilies. This meeting is free and open to the public.

Historic Fort open Aug. 23-24
On the weekend of Aug. 23-24 Fort Wayne’s historic fort will host a clash of forces between the French and British as the 1700s come alive. On hand will be fur traders, Native Americans, civilians and soldiers demonstrating daily activities at the French outpost known as Post Miami during the French and Indian War.
Experience the battles and infantry drills, visit merchants and tour the Old Fort and talk with historical artisans.
The fort, located at 1201 Spy Run Ave. in Fort Wayne, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission will be a freewill donation. Direct questions to www.oldfortwayne.org.

Farmers Market: Diabetic Meal Planning Aug. 23
It can be a challenge to plan meals to suit diabetic diets. If you face this issue, help is available. Lori Kerns, from the Bluffton Regional Medical Center, will be featured this month in “Fast Fact at the Farmer’s Market.” 
Learn more about diabetic meal planning on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bluffton Farmer’s Market.  Just stop in the “Fast Facts” tent.

Steve Thompson benefit Aug. 30
The Bluffton Masonic Lodge 145 will sponsor a benefit breakfast Saturday, Aug. 30 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at 211 W. Cherry Street. A free will offering will be taken with proceeds going to the Steve Thompson family to help defray the costs of his medical treatment. 
Steve was seriously injured in an auto related accident Thursday, Aug. 7. 
The menu will include biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage links, toast, milk, juice and coffee. The event is open to the public. No carry outs will be available.

Portland’s Art Works offers fall art classes
Registration is now underway for the 2014-2015  classes at Arts Place in Portland.
Session 1 begins Sept. 8; Session 2 on Nov. 3; Session 3 on Jan. 12 and Session 4 on March 30. Each session is six weeks long.
Offered will be hand building with clay and wheel thrown pottery, both with Mary Boetegger; toddler art class with Ashley Austerman; teen clay sculpture with Ashley Austerman; teen drawing and painting with Ashley Austerman; oil painting with Steve McClung and  silk painting, watercolor painting and egg tempura, all with Barbie Stump.
A wine basket weaving class with Wilma Rigby will met on Sept. 24 and 26, and card making with Heidi Bouse will be a two hour class on Oct. 15 and April 8. Balloon art with Christina Williamson will be offered on Oct. 3 and Dec. 5.

Luau Block Party Aug. 23
The Bluffton Parks Department will host the first ever Luau Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 23! The Island Breeze band will provide the entertainment with Caribbean music and steel drums,. They will encourage the crowd to hula, calypso, Congo and limbo. 
The Parks Department will provide those attending with 80 tons of sand to create a “beach” and Fire Poi performers.
Local artists will be on hand showing and selling their unique items. 
Following the concert the movie Planes will be shown on the big screen starting at dusk (8:45 p.m.). The movie is fully funded by the Wells County Foundation and free popcorn donated by Weaver will be served by “All Things Power.”

Deadline Aug. 25 for prince & princess contest
Contestants ages 4-6 are needed for the Ossian Days Prince and Princess contest. Entry forms are available at the Ossian Town Hall. The deadline is Aug. 25.
Contestants are asked to dress as something sports related (no swimsuits please) as the theme is Wide World of Sports. They will be judged on penny votes, costume, and interview on Friday, Sept. 5, at 5:30 p.m. in the big tent. Whitetails Unlimited Event Oct. 25
Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Wells County Whitetails Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Wells County 4-H Expo at 1240 4-H Park Road in Bluffton. 
The event will feature a buffet dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor-related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events.
A WTU mission-related grant from this event will go toward Local 4-H shooting sports and other youth education and conservation events.

Gospel weekend Aug. 16-17
The 25th annual Gospel Weekend for MDA will be held at Wildwood Outdoor Escape, 520W-300N, Hartford City on the weekend of Aug. 16-17.
There will be three free concerts starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The second will be at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and the third at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
There will be singers from Muncie, Richmond, Hagerstown, Greensboro, Dayton and Hartford City. Admission to the campground is free.

Bluegrass Jamboree Aug. 17
A Bluegrass Jam will be held Sunday, Aug. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Limberlost State Historic Site, located at 200 E. 6th Street in Geneva. This is the second of three bluegrass jamborees scheduled this summer. The summer music series does not have a set lineup. Artist show up and perform on a volunteer basis.
Musicians of any ability can show off their talents and entertain other visitors while enjoying the beautiful grounds of the Limberlost cabin. More than Art tickets on sale
The 48th annual Penrod Arts Fair will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It is known as one of the nation’s largest single day arts fairs.
This year’s fair features over three hundred artists, six stages of entertainment, more than 50 arts-related non-profit organizations, and an extensive children’s area. Gene Stratton-Porter celebration
Limberlost State Historic Site, in collaboration with The Friends of the Limberlost, will celebrate the life and legacy of author, naturalist, photographer and movie producer Gene Stratton-Porter at a special 151st birthday celebration on Friday, Aug. 15 from 6–9 p.m. at the historic site. 
The affair, Geneva’s Geneva, will feature food and fun and guests are welcome to dress in time period clothing. Guests will learn about Gene Stratton-Porter’s natural science and literary legacy by walking a timeline that features important events that happened during the time Mrs. Porter lived in Geneva.  A special birthday cake and refreshments will be served.

Girls on the Run Program
The Bluffton Parks Department is looking to start a Girls On The Run program in Bluffton. 
Girls On The Run is an international program for girls in third through fifth grades. The program focuses on healthy choices, feeling strong and self confident, and life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. 

The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event.  The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.  For more information go to www.GirlsOnTheRun.org. Taste of JA Sampling Event Aug. 23
Junior Achievement serving Wells County will present the Taste of JA Sampling Event Saturday, Aug. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sassafras on Main at 218 S. Main St. in Bluffton.
The evening will offer fun and food sampling from local community members as they become “chefs” for the evening.
Tickets are $25 per person or $40 for couples. All proceeds will benefit more than 2,630 students who participate in the JA programs operating in Wells County.

Discovery Corner: ABC’s and 123’s during August
During August in the Discovery Gallery at the Botanical Conservatory young visitors can enjoy stories and activities behind Woody the Talking Tree.

Friends of Shelter meeting Aug. 11
Friends of the Shelter, the organization that provides support for the Bluffton and Wells County Animal Shelter, will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11 in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall at 128 E. Market Street.
Items on the agenda include shelter operations and results from the Dog Wash Fundraiser.

Theater Thursday  slated Aug. 21
The Theater Thursday free movie for adults will be on Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Wells County Public Library. The movie shown  will be “Parental Guidance.”
The Bluffton Parks and Recreational Department, Wells County Public Library and Bluffton Regional Senior Circle have partnered together to offer a free monthly movie.

Family Garden Close-Up: Birds Aug. 23
On Saturday, Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Botanical Conservatory will offer information on some of Indiana’s most common backyard birds.  Attendees will see see how many of these warm-blooded, egg-laying vertebrates they can find. Then students will make something special for them for their own backyard.  The event is free with regular Conservatory admission. Cost is $5 per adult, $3 per child age 3-17. Punt, Pass, Kick Aug. 23
The Bluffton Parks Department and Bluffton High School Football will host the Parks Department’s third annual NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition on Saturday, August 23 at 10 a.m at the Bluffton High School Football Stadium.

Frankenmuth Michigan Trip Aug. 26
The Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion will sponsor an overnight trip to Frankenmuth Michigan for any senior age 55 and older Aug. 26 and 27. The cost is $120 per person with two people per room, or $95 per person with four people per room. The cost does not include meals. Payment will be due at the time of registration.

‘Swift’ Night Out at Geneva Aug. 9
A Swift Night Out will be held at the Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. The free family event will feature a program about Chimney Swifts.
Alex Forsythe, Indiana Audubon Society’s Young Birder of the Year will be doing the presentation. A “Swift Sit” in downtown Geneva will follow the presentation.

Clean Green Workshop Aug. 23
Did you know the most toxic and poisonous things in your home are usually under the kitchen sink? Cleaning products are full of toxins and chemicals that are dangerous and pollute the environment. 
The Botanical Conservatory will offer a Clean Green Workshop Saturday, Aug. 23 Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Christine Rodriguez and Kelley Elkins will walk attendees through how to make a variety of handmade natural cleaning products to take home and test out, including an all-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, dish soap, air freshener and more!
Registration deadline is Aug. 15. Cost is $32 per person or $28 for members.

Garrett Summer Music Fest Aug. 16
The Garrett Summer Sixties free Music Fest will be held Saturday, Aug. 16. They will celebrate the 45th anniversary of Woodstock. 
The program will offer live 60’s music from 2-8 p.m. on two stages. There will be  dancing, arts, crafts, food and drink vendors, activities for children, an adult hula-hoop contest, and more. From 8 p.m. to midnight there will be a black light record hop.

Scott Harris Benefit Aug. 16
A Benefit Garage Sale, Bake Sale and Lemonade Stand will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6642N-Ind. 1 in Ossian for the family of Scott Harris.
Scott was severely injured in an automobile accident recently. He is at home recovering at this time. All of the proceeds from this event will go to Scott and his family to help cover medical costs and costs of living since he is unable to work.

Farm Bureau Annual Meeting Aug. 19
The Wells County Farm Bureau Inc. Annual Meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Wells County 4-H Park Community Center at 6 p.m. Lighted Gardens will provide the meal. Tony Garton of Bluffton will be the featured speaker.
Tickets are available at the Farm Bureau office through Aug. 11 to all members.

Vendors needed for Craft Bazaar Oct. 25
Vendors are needed for the second Annual Allen County 4-H Fairgrounds Craft Bazaar Saturday Oct. 25 at the Allen County 4-H Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost for an 8-foot  booth space, with table, will be $35.

Farmer’s Market Wednesdays and Saturdays
The Farmer’s Market is now open at the Dutch Mill Plaza (Main Street at the bridge) on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. 
Current features include herbs, flowers, fresh fruits, fresh local vegetables, including sweet corn and tomatoes, fresh baked goods, fresh roasted coffee, locally produced BBQ sauces and spice mixes, woodworking products, candles, handmade crafts, locally grown meat, and more. (Pd. Advt.)

Last Wet Wacky Wednesday July 9
The pool will be open for evening family swim for the last Wednesday for the 2014 summer pool season. Pool hours are 6:30-8 p.m. and cost is $1.50 per person over age five. 

All youth must be accompanied by an adult.
