What's Up

Deadline May 2 for quarterly senior citizens’ dinner:
New Hope Lutheran Church in Ossian will again hold its quarterly senior citizens’ dinner for anyone ages 55 or older from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, in the fellowship hall.

There will be a sing-a-long with Ed Higgins; the speaker is naturalist Jodie Heaston. A freewill offering dinner will be served by the ladies of New Hope. RSVP to 622-7954 by Monday, May 2.

Haydn's Creation May 1:
The Mennonite Choral Society will present "Haydn's Creation" at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the First Mennonite Church in Berne.

The conductor will be Brent Hyman. Soloists will be Kathryn Stieler from Grand Rapids, Mich.; Alexis Cramber from Berne; Daniel Gast from Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Dr. Craig Priebe from Muncie. Accompanists include pianist Phyllis Shinn from Bluffton and organist Gloria Wendell of Van Wert, Ohio. A freewill offering will be taken. The public is welcome to attend the event.

Historical Museum opens for season May 1:
The Wells County Historical Society will open for the season Sunday, May 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum is located at 420 W. Market Street. Operating hours will be Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. May through October.

The annual ice cream social will be held Sunday, June 26, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Free breakfast for seniors scheduled for May 6 in Berne:
In recognition of May as National Older Americans Month, Swiss Village and the Berne Rotary Club will cosponsor their 21st annual senior breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, May 6, at Swiss Village.

The breakfast will consist of scrambled eggs, biscuits, pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee. All seniors are welcome.

Community Plant Swap May 7:
Herbs’ Friends will be hold their 14th annual community plant swap from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Riverside Center in Decatur. This year’s Herb of the Year is horseradish.

The annual event is open to the public. Doors will open at 6 a.m. for participants to set up their displays. Sales start at 7 a.m. Tables will be provided. There will be a $10/table fee to participate this year.

Scholarship available for Blackford students:
Blackford County Community Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 academic year from students other than high school seniors who are enrolled in college or vocational schools and programs.

Applicants must be either graduates of Blackford High School or residents of Blackford County and have a current GPA of 2.50 or greater.

Forms are available online at www.blackfordcofoundation.org or at the Foundation's office at 121 N. High Street, Hartford City.

Fish & Tenderloin Supper April 28:
The Liberty Center Methodist Church will sponsor a Dan's Fish and Tenderloin supper Thursday, April 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the fellowship hall.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for those ages 6 and younger.

Proceeds will go to park maintenance, insurance, mowing and repairs.

Reservations extended to May 13 for Nashville, Ind., Trip:
The South Adams Senior Center is sponsoring a bus trip to Nashville, Ind., Saturday, June 18. Cost is $45 per person and is not refundable. Reservations and payment has been extended to May 13. Call 260-589-8877.

Those attending will leave from the South Adams Senior Center parking lot at 7 a.m. and return at 10 p.m. Persons under age 13 are not permitted to attend. An adult must accompany those ages 13-18. Those wanting to go can be picked up in the parking lot at Krogers/Scotts in Decatur.

Those attending should bring a snack to eat on the bus. No glass containers allowed.

Easter Egg Hunt April 30:
A spring egg hunt will be held Saturday, April 30, at 9 a.m. at the St. John Family Worship Center at 2771 Mulberry Street in Vera Cruz.

School fundraiser begins

The Bluffton High School sophomore class is selling discount cards featuring local merchants to raise money for the 2012 prom and 2013 graduation. You can purchase the $10 card from a sophomore or at the high school office.

Friend Day at Grace Baptist Church May 1:

Grace Baptist Church is inviting the community to Friend Day on Sunday, May 1, after the 10 a.m. service. The church will hold a dinner and concert after the service.

The day will feature Alan Harris, who has toured nationally with many of the Gaither Homecoming artists and was recently nominated for a Diamond Award for male vocalist of the year. Harris has been a featured performer at the Southern Gospel Music Fan Fair in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Ky., two of southern gospel music’s premier events.

SA Senior Center to benefit from grocery receipts:
Beginning May 1, the South Adams Senior Center will be eligible to collect grocery receipts from Community Market Stores.

Anyone with receipts can drop them at the office or in the mail slot. They can also mail the receipts to the center. The center will receive one percent of the total purchase. The receipts' refund checks go to fund activities and programs.

Our Weakening Web: The Story of Extinction going on now:
Science Central will have a national traveling exhibit titled, “Our Weakening Web: The Story of Extinction,” now through May 29 in the lower level in the Traveling Exhibit Gallery.

The exhibit is on loan from the Cincinnati Museum Center.

Zumba starts May 5:
Zumba classes will be held at the City Gym on Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. beginning May 5. Cost is $5 per class or $20 for five classes. Recommended for ages 13 (with parents consent) and older.

Easter Bunny to visit Portland April 22 and 23:
The Easter Bunny will visit Portland Friday, April 22, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, April 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Jay County Chamber of Commerce located on East Main Street in Portland.

Spring Choir Concert April 26:
Bluffton Christian School's choir will perform Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at Christian New Light Church at 1011 W. Washington St. Call 824-1203 for questions.

Basket Bingo April 30:
The Montpelier Lions Club will sponsor a Vera Bradley and Longaberger Basket bingo Saturday, April 30, at the Lions Club. Doors will open at 9 a.m. Bingo starts at 10 a.m. Cost is $15 for 15 games and two raffles.

Apostolic Bake Sale April 22
The Apostolic Christian Church will sponsor a bake sale Friday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to noon at Resource Maintenance at 225 W. Market Street. Proceeds will go to World Relief.

Voices of Power Port-A-Pit Chicken Fundraiser April 23
Voices of Power, a local youth music ministry, will sponsor a port-a-pit chicken fundraiser Saturday, April 23, from 11 a.m. until all chickens are sold at the Villa North parking lot in Bluffton. Cost is $6 per half chicken. All proceeds will go to the group to fund mission trips and other youth activities.

Bike, car and truck show scheduled April 30
An open bike, car and truck show will again be held by the Living Faith Missionary Church youth group on April 30. All types of motorcycles, cars and trucks are welcome. Door prizes and trophies will be awarded. A registration fee of $10 will be charged for each entry. Concessions will be available on site.

This is the main fundraiser for the church youth. The profit will provide opportunities for the youth to attend camps, conferences and missions this summer. The church is located at 17718 S. Ind. 1 in Yoder. Any questions can be directed to Living Faith Missionary Church at 622-7103.

Port-a-Pit Chicken Benefit for Matthew Scott May 6
A port-a-pit chicken benefit for 15-year-old Matthew Scott will be held Friday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to until chicken is gone at the Walgreens parking lot in Bluffton. Proceeds will go toward medical expenses for a broken leg. He has no medical insurance. Thrivent Financial is also a sponsor of the benefit. Southern Wells Church Easter Egg Hunt April 23:
The Southern Wells Community Church will sponsor an Easter egg hunt Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. on the south playground of Southern Wells Elementary School.

Deadline April 25 for Leader Training Lessons:
Purdue Extension Blackford County is sponsoring Leader Training Lessons April 28 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Blackford County Courthouse Annex meeting room. There is no cost to attend these lessons.

Hope That’s Within Reach:
Area dancers will communicate through their upcoming ministry event on Friday, April 29 ,and Sunday, May 1.

The River Dance Company is a nonprofit studio that celebrates the creative arts with a Christ-centered difference. “Our Hope is Built on This” will be presented free in the Family Life Center of Central Church on Ind. 37 on Friday, April 29, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, at 6 p.m. A love offering will be taken. Sixty-five dancers ages 3 through adults from more than 20 area churches will present this combination of dance, testimony, music and lighting.

South Adams Senior Luncheon April 27:
Senior Luncheons will resume Wednesday, April 27, at noon at South Adams Senior Center.
The meal will be catered again this year by Norm's Preble Gardens. Cost is $5. The menu will include: beef and noodles, mashed potatoes, corn, roll and butter, cake and drinks.

Hog Roast Benefit May 22
A Hog Roast will be held Sunday, May 22, at noon at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Bluffton to benefit Floneta Welsh, who has been diagnosed with two liver diseases. She is on the waiting list for a liver transplant, which will take place in Rochester, Minn. Registration for Ride for the Cause will be from noon to 1 p.m. at $10 per bike. First bike out at 1 p.m. Last bike in at 3 p.m.

There will be a 50/50 drawing, a bake sale, country music concerts 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. by Mountain Dewe Boyes and Dave Liles Band featuring Jake Lewis. An auction will be held at 5 p.m.

Open Mic Poetry Reading April 18
A free Open Mic Poetry Reading will be held Monday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the Creative Arts Center.

Coffee and cookies will be available. Poets have a venue to present their recent original works. The event often attracts poets from the surrounding region as well as students.

All poets are welcome to read. A timer will limit the length of readings so that as many readers as possible will be able to fill the time slots with their verse.

Basket Making Class April 20
Deb Gerber will lead a Basket Making Class Wednesday, April 20, at 9 a.m., at the South Adams Senior Center.

Participants of the class will make an Easter Basket. Supplies needed are tape measure, sharp scissors, pencil, towel and a spray bottle of water. All reed and materials to make the basket will be pre-cut and furnished for you.

Cost of the class is $20. Class size will be limited to 12 people.

Egg Coloring Eggstravaganza April 21
Bring your own hard boiled eggs and let us take care of the decoration, supplies and mess!
This event will be held in the city gym from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Those attending must preregister by calling 824-6069 to sign up for this free event sponsored by the Bluffton Parks and Recreation Department.

Chester Center Alumni Banquet April 23
The Chester Center Alumni Banquet will be held April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Southern Wells school. There will be an antique car and tractor show from noon to 5 p.m. The new monument will be dedicated at 5:15 p.m.

Anyone who ever attended Chester Center, even if you didn't graduate from there, is invited to participate in the old car and tractor show.

St.Paul Ladies Aid will sponsor A Gently Used Sale and Noodles on Friday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be a $2 bag sale on Saturday.
St. Paul Lutheran Church (Preble) is located at the corner of 750N and 450W in Adams County.

Easter Egg Hunt April 16
The Bluffton Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 16.

The lawn at Roush Park will be full of colorful eggs and fresh rabbit tracks. The hunt will begin at 12:30 p.m. Bring your basket-toting youngsters to the Roush Park boys concession stand.

Children will be divided into the following age groups: 3 and under, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Each age group will have a “golden egg” ticket inside one of the eggs.

Bring that ticket to the parks employee to claim the grand prizes. This is a free event. For more information call 824-6069.

Dog Egg Hunt April 16
Bring your leashed dog to Roush Park to sniff out the treat-stuffed eggs. This event starts at 12:45 p.m.

Make sure to open the eggs to see if your dog found the special grand prize. This is a free event sponsored by the Bluffton Parks and Recreation Department. For more information call 824-6069.

A reception will be held Sunday, April 17, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the Tri Kappa High School Art Awards Exhibit.

4-H RABBIT WORKSHOP

Wells County 4-H will hold a 4-H Rabbit Project Workshop on Thursday, April 14, 7 to 8 PM at the Wells County Community Center, 4-H Park, Bluffton.

Information on feeding and caring for your 4-H rabbits will be presented.

2011 4-H DAIRY FEEDER CALF IDENTIFICATION DAY

The Wells County 4-H Dairy Feeder Calf Identification Day will be held Saturday,
April 16th, 8 AM to 10:30 AM at the Wells County 4-H Park in the Multi-Purpose Arena located west of the horse barn.

All 4-H dairy feeder calves must be weighed and ear tagged in order to show at the 4-H Fair in July. Calves may not weigh more than 215 lbs. at the ID Day. Only steers (no heifers) may be exhibited in the project.

This yearís 4-H Fair will be held July 16 to 21.

The Dairy Feeder Show is scheduled for Monday, July 18, 6 PM.

Animal forms will be available at the event and a local veterinarian will also be at the event if you are in need of their services.

A Pancake and Sausage Breakfast will be held Saturday, April 9, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Lancaster Chapel United Methodist Church at 4510E. 400N. in Craigville. A freewill donation will be taken, with proceeds going to the Lancaster Chapel 2011 Bible School. The public is welcome to attend the event.

Craft and Bake Sale at Markle April 9
The Markle United Methodist Church will sponsor the first-annual Craft and Bake sale Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Items include baked goods, jewelry, silk flower arrangements, handmade rugs and towels, purses, home and garden items, afghans, Nascar items, personalized items, homemade candies, garden tiles, Pampered Chef and homemade salsa. There will also be many baked goods for sale also. There will be a chicken-and-noodle dinner that evening. The event is open to the public for a freewill donation. Booth space still available. What's Up

Benefit ride for Deena McClure April 9
Circle W Riders Horse Club will be sponsoring a benefit ride for the Deena McClure family Saturday, April 9, at 10 a.m. The ride will start at Bob Pribles’ home, 1850W 700S. Instead of money we are asking for nonperishable food items. You don’t have to have a horse to ride. We will have a wagon to ride on. After the ride we plan on eating around 1:30 p.m., followed by an Easter egg hunt. Bring a dozen eggs to hide and a dish to share.

If you cannot come and still want to help, there will be a van parked in the Bluffton Motor Works parking lot on Wayne Street across from the high school drive. Watch for the signs. This will be on Sunday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Blackford County celebrates agriculture April 9
Join the celebration of agriculture and farming on Saturday, April 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Blackford County 4-H Fairgrounds. Activities will include educational booths, displays, children’s activities, stir-fry demo, farming for pizza, presentations, a petting zoo, a 4-H Dog Club agility demonstration, a rodeo demonstration a portable sawmill demonstration and more. In addition there will be a freewill-donation lunch, free family photos in front of a farm scene and free farm books for children.

Spring Fling Family Dance April 10
The Spring Fling Family Dance will be held Sunday, April 10, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wells County 4-H Community Center.
Tickets are $10 for four people; tickets are $3 for each additional child. Bring the whole family out for an old-fashioned hoedown!
Enjoy an evening of music, refreshments, door prizes and treat bags for the kids. Don’t forget to bring your own camera to capture all the smiling faces.
